I am an experienced teacher, accomplished, friendly, lively and enthusiastic. I love teaching Reading/Language Arts to students of all ages and to help students improve study and organizational skills. I believe learning should be structured yet I know the importance of engendering creative thinking in my students. I also teach piano to students of all ages and levels. I have a unique background that combines expertise in both music (piano) and Language Arts since my BA is in Music Education and I've been teaching piano for over 30 years, but my MA is in Liberal Studies/Literature and I've taught English at the college level. I am extremely patient and kind, and know the importance of allowing the student to succeed, repeating the basics as many times as is necessary and making the lesson lively and fun. I've been a teacher my whole life and love the work; I find it fulfilling and fun to work with young people and especially, to teach them the subjects I love most - reading, writing and music.

I provide a discounted rate for tutoring more than one student in a home. In addition, my hourly rate will be reduced for sessions that are two hours or more.
My daughter does not enjoy writing and every time we tried ways to make write, she always found excuses. Debbie has been very good and patient with her. She has found the areas my daughter needs help with and for once my daughter is not complaining about writing. We look forward to continuing to work with her.
Over the last few months my daughter has gone from being a reluctant writer to somebody who is enjoying writing. Debbie has been a great teacher and I highly recommend her. Thanks Debbie!
Thanks so much for your kind words, Molly! Yes, it's been quite a pleasure to watch your daughter improve her writing over the months, and to see her develop into the writer she has become! I see that she takes pride and pleasure in her work and that makes me very happy!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For students who show an interest in music composition, I teach how to compose a melody and how to "lock in" that melody before it disappears. Students will learn shortcuts of how to write melody down, then notate it in the correct manner after they have gotten it on paper. I have three pianos in my studio, one is electric and this enables me to tape students as they play their melodies and have them listen to it on Playback and add harmony to their composition.
I have a BA in Music Education. I include sight singing and ear training as part of theory during piano lessons. Also include fun and challenging rhythm games which students seem to universally enjoy. Encourage students to sing and accompany themselves if they have an interest in that area.
I am an experienced teacher with MA in Literature enjoys teaching Elementary level students in Language Arts, Reading, English and Writing. Will assist with preparation for exams, study skills, composition writing etc.
I am extremely patient and warm and I believe it is very important for students to actively participate in the learning experience. I know the importance of assisting students who may be struggling in reading and/or writing and I have had experience with phonics based reading programs that help students to hear and differentiate among word sounds. (I have trained Elementary School teachers on how to utilize a specific phonics based reading program.) I also seek to nurture the creativity and a sense of accomplishment in young people and to help those who are struggling to realize that they are perfectly capable of learning the material. There is nothing I enjoy more than to see the intellectual growth and increased confidence of the students I tutor as they progress in their schoolwork.
I have utilized phonics training to help students decode words by segmenting, blending and manipulating phonemes, (i.e. the smallest units of sound,) and syllables to facilitate reading. I have trained elementary and middle school teachers on how to utilize an educational phonics based software program with their students. I stress the importance of phonological awareness, i.e. awareness of the sound structure of the written word such as the ability to distinguish between the "ow" and "oo" sounds. In my lessons, I stress work on phonemic and phonological awareness since this is integral to learning phonics. Strong phonemic awareness improves reading and reading comprehension and helps the student with spelling; this is the basis for learning phonics.
Have taught piano to students of all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced, for over 30 years.
I use a variety of methods books and tailor my instruction to the individual student. I incorporate theory into lessons and allow students to learn music (songs) they like as well as the ones included in piano books. Have extensive lending library of piano music for students usage
Completed an MA IN 2010. I thoroughly enjoy sharing my love of music with my students!
I have worked as an Editor for a Trade Association's magazine and newsletter. I have also written and edited copy for the Westfield Symphony Orchestra' concert programs and brochures. Both of these positions required constant proofreading. In addition, in my daily tutoring, I actively edit and revise student essays and have done so on the HS and College levels, as well as Elementary School level. I am an extremely thorough and detail oriented proofreader with many years of experience.
I allow students who enjoy singing, to sight sing piano melodies and to clap and patch rhythms. I teach students how to accompany themselves while singing if this is interests them. Also incorporate sight singing activities in lessons if time permits. My BA is in Music Education
Students who are oriented toward composing music and wish to write songs will be taught how this is done. Students will learn how to compose a melody, how to save it or "lock it" in so that they don't forget it, how to correctly notate it and how to add lyrics. Students will be encouraged to be creative but at the same time, I will help them give their song(s) a cohesive structure. Students will lean to sing and/or play their original song. I have a BA in Music Education.
I worked with a disabled student at Union County College who was both physically and mentally impaired. I tutored him in Reading, Writing and Algebra, accompanied him to all of his classes, took notes and tutored him with his homework and study assignments. In addition, I have taught developmental reading classes at Union County College. I am qualified to tutor students of all ages in Reading and Writing and in English, and consider myself to be extremely patient and nurturing with students who have difficulty understanding the material.
I am an English teacher who has worked at college level and has also trained Elementary School teachers on how to utilize a reading program that deals in phonemic and phonological awareness. Emphasis placed on phonemes, i.e. on differentiating among cognitive units of speech sound to assist students in hearing, sounding and reading words accurately, particularly when speech sounds are extremely similar as in "aw" and "ow". I have also worked as a vocal (singing) teacher who trains students to properly shape the mouth in singing to produce proper sound.
In teaching Reading and Writing (Language Arts) to students off all
Grade levels, I stress the importance of proper study and organizational
skills. In college reading courses I have taught students how to prioritize
their assignments, develop focus and direction, and time management skills
and to apply themselves effectively to homework assignments. This involves
teaching students how to seek out salient points in their reading material,
the main idea of the assignment (and of the paragraph), supporting ideas etc.
Students will also learn how to outline what they read and to hone in
on material that will appear in quizzes and tests. Younger students are taught
similar study and organizational skills and encouraged to use note cards
to clarify and organize their learning.
I am a Writing and Reading Teacher who tutors students individually and has taught English and Developmental Reading in Union County College. I enjoy helping students construct cohesive essays and work with students in Elementary, HS and College levels. I understand the importance of pre-writing and organizing the essay so that all salient points are clearly listed. This strategy helps bring the essay to a solid conclusion, often the most difficult part of essay writing. I enjoy helping students write all types of essays: narrative, descriptive, informative etc., and to aid in research for research papers.
