ABOUT ME
Ten years ago, I taught my very first SAT class, substituting for a certified high school teacher & highly experienced test prep instructor. At the end, I overheard one student tell her friends as they left the room: "For the first time since I started this class, I actually get this stuff. I wish we had this new teacher earlier. Hope he stays." Her friends nodded in emphatic assent. From that moment, I have been hooked on teaching.

- 10+ years of experience.
- 99th Percentile Scores on the SAT, ACT, & GRE.
- Thousands of hours logged in 1-on-1 lessons, classes, & workshops.
- State-of-the-art curriculum, featuring battle-tested techniques & high-yield approaches for every section & question type.
- 60+ Testimonials - more reviews than the combined staff at most tutoring companies.
- Ranked on Wyzant as top tutor in region for 6+ years.
- Top 0.5% of 75,000+ tutors nationwide in 2014
- Top 100 nationwide in 2015.

The best tutoring firms in NJ - Integrated Educational Services (IES), Summit Prep (formerly Ivy Plus), EMBRACE Tutoring - have recruited & hired me to teach students, train staff, develop curriculum, & design innovative, cutting-edge techniques to give our students a commanding lead. I have retained the best of these methods for my students, & most of these are unavailable anywhere else.

My results far outstrip industry standards. Given sufficient time/effort in preparation, test scores typically improve by 250 - 600 points on the Old SAT, 150 - 300 on the New SAT, 5 - 9 points on the ACT, & 6 - 20 points on the GRE. Many students achieve perfect 800’s + 36’s on all sections of the SAT and ACT.

Though I am based in Central NJ, I regularly receive tutoring requests from all corners of New Jersey, New York, & even online tutoring requests from as far away as California & Hawaii. Many of my students attend the most prestigious schools in the state, (Wardlaw-Hartridge, PINGRY, Newark Academy, & Rutgers Prep) & use my services to get an edge over their competitive classmates. Past students have received numerous scholarships & acceptances to such excellent institutions as NYU, Columbia, Rutgers, Wellesley, Northeastern, & many more.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
1. See what the “geniuses” see - Students often ask "How do I know when to use equation A or Formula B" & marvel at "smarter" classmates who apply new subject matter so easily. What they do not realize is that these "smarter" students simply spot clues/indicators that others miss, & intuit what to do. Tennis champions don’t watch the opponent’s ball: instead, they watch their body mechanics, predict the ball’s path, & respond. If they see X, they do Y. My teaching paradigm reduces to "If you see X, do Y". I teach my students to see what high achieving students see, recruit relevant concepts from memory, & apply them to gain a competitive edge.

2. Eliminate Weaknesses - Studying on their own, few students can actually improve their own performance. Though they know which subjects give them difficulty, they are unable to understand WHY they go wrong or how to avoid that error. When working with students, I target specific weaknesses to achieve the best results in the least time. I identify a specific aspect of their performance that needs improvement - i.e. setting up an equation, writing a stronger topic sentence - & offer concrete, applicable solutions to their problems.

3. Work Smart: When teaching a subject, (whether it is calculus, essay writing, or biology) I build “big picture” overviews from overarching trends & root concepts, not only to increase efficiency and retention, but to promote holistic thinking and intuition. An ineffective learner relies on rote memorization and passive absorption. They memorize all forms of Spanish verbs, such as “tener = to have” and “tengo = I have”. An effective learner, on the other hand, uses basic principles and trends to engage with and process new information. They apply basic rules of grammar to different verbs to generate the forms. My students learn to work smart, not hard.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT English section is actually the easiest of the 4 ACT sections on which to improve your score.

For the ACT English section (commonly referred to as the "grammar" section), I teach students how to use visual clues in both the passage and the answers to 1.) identify the grammatical topic or stylistic consideration being tested and 2.) recruit from memory and apply the correct information to answer the question.

My students learn to rapidly and easily eliminate wrong answers and recognize the most commonly tested types of grammatical errors. Many of them report learning things "they never knew" about the rudiments of grammar and punctuation, and find their performance and confidence improve drastically!

ACT Math

Through years of tutoring math for the ACT, as well as for courses such as trigonometry, precalculus, and algebra 2, I have not only become intimately familiar with all the content and problem types that appear on the ACT, but I am able to teach all this content in an intuitive, logical way with more rapidly attained and far superior results to the competition.

ACT Reading

For the ACT Reading section, I have developed a highly effective and innovative set of content-based strategies that utilize important textual clues hidden in the passage and the question stem to 1) arrive at the correct answer before looking at the answer choices 2) effectively eliminate "trap" answers. Students will see their speed, confidence and accuracy improve tremendously as they learn to literally "pull" the answers out of the passage!

I have developed finely tuned methods for dealing with different aspects of the test experience, including timing/pacing, skimming passages for details, determining the main idea, and more. I have also identified the common trends/clues that appear in each of the four types of ACT passages (Prose Fiction, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences) and can teach students how to spot this information to enhance their understanding. Used correctly my methods enable students to attain greater accuracy and confidence than they ever thought possible.

Used correctly my methods will save a great deal of time and energy when taking the ACT Reading section. Many students have improved their Reading Score by anywhere from 3 - 10 points and I have had many perfect 36's!

ACT Science

Despite the name, the ACT Science section is actually a modified reading comprehension test. This unique test incorporates graphics such as charts, tables, graphs and diagrams to test certain skills relating to data interpretation, trend prediction, etc. Many of these passages overwhelm and intimidate students; however, I teach my students an innovative strategy that dramatically simplifies the test and results in drastic improvements in accuracy and confidence.

In addition, I also help students fine-tune specific skills and applications such as extrapolating and interpolating for data, identifying trends, and much, much more.

Algebra 1

Algebra is the basic language of all higher math, and that is exactly how I teach it - as a language of symbols. By teaching students to recognize key words and verbal cues in word problems, I students to "translate" the problems into equations with relative ease and solve the problem! From the weakest math students to the most advanced, the results of my method are always apparent from the very first lesson. Students learn to think of algebra intuitively and logically resulting in sustainable long-term improvements in their performance which in turn translates into increased confidence in future math courses.

I also offer algebra review for test prep, including SAT Math and the SAT Subject Test in Math.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 focuses on advanced mathematical operations, such as those pertaining to complex numbers, factorization, linear systems, matrices and elementary functions, which comprise the essential knowledge base for trigonometry and precalculus. Often times, students struggle because they lack the essential foundational knowledge or skills to work through the problems with speed and fluency. When teaching Algebra 2, I first focus on instilling proper technique and effective problem-solving habits that are not always covered thoroughly in standard high school courses. I then work with the student to improve their speed and confidence without sacrificing accuracy resulting in significant improvements in relatively short time.

I also offer algebra 2 review for test prep, including SAT Math and the SAT Subject Test in Math.

Anatomy

I have taken anatomy courses at the collegiate, pre-medical and graduate school levels and am familiar with the general scope and content of the subject matter as it is relevant to aspiring medical students and nursing students. When tutoring anatomy, I often tie the material back to relevant examples and applications in medicine and biology to ensure optimal retention and comprehension. by emphasizing the classic "form-fits-function" theme. As much as possible, I try to explain the material using visual analogies to emphasize how anatomical "form" fits biological, evolutionary and physiological "function".

Biology

Due to my Biomedical Engineering background, you can expect a strong mastery and grasp of Biology. What I bring to my tutoring sessions for Biology sessions is a new way of looking at every aspect of the subject.

With the extensive use of analogies and examples, I transform even the most advanced concepts and intricate details into an easily understood and readily recallable framework of knowledge. I emphasize visualization and creating connections between new material and old material to better store information and enhance understanding at the deepest level.

My lessons will cover a lot in each session, but it will never feel that way. I will show you superior strategies and ways to organize information into a hierarchy that makes learning meaningful and enjoyable.

I have experience tutoring for both the AP and SAT Subject tests in Biology with great success stories.

Calculus

I have tutored students in calculus at the regular, AP, and collegiate levels and scored a perfect 5/5 myself on the AP exam when I took it in high school. Factoring in my engineering background, I am well qualified to tutor in this subject and have received many positive reviews and testimonials for doing so.

My lessons will reinforce the conceptual side of calculus by relating everything I teach you to real-world applications in physics, biology, business, and economics. I also teach students to see calculus as a "visual" science by demonstrating how every concept has a graphical interpretation that is useful for deriving formulas, retaining information, and essential for understanding which concept to use in which problems.

In addition, I will show you superior problem solving strategies to solve problems with greater speed and accuracy that makes Calculus easier than you ever thought it could be!

(I also provide intensive review for prerequisite math subject matter including algebra, geometry, algebra 2, trigonometry and precalculus.)

Chemistry

Due to my Engineering background, you can expect a strong mastery and grasp of Chemistry. What I bring to my tutoring sessions for Chemistry sessions is a new way of looking at every aspect of the subject.

I have experience tutoring for both the AP and SAT Subject tests in Chemistry with great success stories.

Geometry

I have taught geometry to students at the regular, accelerated, and honors levels as well as for the SAT, the SAT Math Subject test and the GRE general test. Success in geometry relies on the ability to recall and combine specific concepts given geometric clues such as parallel sides, related angles, proportionality and more. I teach students how to "read" a geometry problem so that they will know instantly which concepts to apply and how to reason their way through the problem using the given information. I also show them intuitive math tricks and content-based strategies to work faster and more effectively.

GRE

For over 10 years, I have taught and tutored for standardized tests for the SAT and ACT, of which the GRE (and its sister, the GMAT) are often referred to as "harder versions". I scored in the 99th percentile when I took the computer adaptive test myself, and tutoring for tests such as these is my specialty. Whether it is the Verbal section or the Quantitative section that gives you the most difficulty, I have developed finely tuned techniques for each question type and the most lucid, relevant explanations of each concept on the market. My teaching style is content-based, NOT gimmick-based: you can expect to learn lots of challenging content in a surprisingly clear and accessible way. Past students have improved by anywhere from 4 - 20 points on the revised test with top scores on the AWA (essay) section.

Physiology

I have taken anatomy and physiology courses at the collegiate, pre-medical, and graduate school levels and am familiar with the general scope and content of the subject matter as it is relevant to aspiring medical students and nursing students. When tutoring these two intertwined subjects, I often tie the material back to relevant examples and applications in medicine and biology to ensure optimal retention and comprehension. As much as possible, I try to explain the material using visual analogies to make the material seem as intuitive as possible.

Precalculus

Through visual methods emphasizing the interpretation of graphs and conceptual methods built around easy-to-understand analogies, I teach students powerful and effective ways to master precalculus and retain their knowledge. Precalculus is cumulative in many ways and is a gateway to calculus and higher math; therefore conceptual understanding is key.

For those struggling with prerequisite math subject matter for precalculus, I also provide intensive review of relevant concepts for algebra, geometry, algebra 2 and trigonometry. I also provide test-prep oriented review for the SAT Math subject test.

Proofreading

As a tutor, I have extensive experience proofreading/editing student papers and have often provided critical support and feedback on term papers and college application essays.

SAT Math

Too often, SAT students make the mistake of viewing the SAT as a "trick" test which can be "gamed" or a test which can only be beaten if they learn to be better test-takers. As a result, they invest in expensive courses and prep books filled with empty "tricks" or generic test-taking strategies that are in turn recycled from different test prep books and most of which are highly ineffective. This is both a waste of time and money.

I have written SAT math programs for test prep companies, been invited by even more to develop their curriculum, teach classes, and even train their staff. Most importantly, I have retained the best material for my own students as I developed my own content-based curriculum built especially for the unique types of questions seen on the SAT. I know EXACTLY which materials, techniques, and concepts are relevant and how to apply them to the SAT. As a result, I have had numerous success stories including several perfect 800 students.

SAT Reading

For the SAT Reading section (now integrated with the Writing and Language section for a single Verbal section scored out of 800), I have developed a highly effective and innovative set of content-based strategies that utilize important textual clues hidden in the passage and the question stem to 1) arrive at the correct answer before looking at the answer choices 2) effectively eliminate "trap" answers. Students will see their speed, confidence and accuracy improve tremendously as they learn to literally "pull" the answers out of the passage!

I also have finely tuned methods for dealing with different aspects of the test experience, including timing/pacing, skimming passages for details, determining the main idea and improving comprehension on different passage types - literature, social studies, history, global issues, and much, much more.

Used correctly my methods will save a great deal of time and energy when taking the SAT Reading section. On both the Old and New SAT, many of my students have reached 700+ scores or attained perfect 800's using my strategies!

SAT Writing

The SAT Writing section is actually the easiest way to improve your Verbal score on the New SAT.

For the Writing and Language section (commonly referred to as the "grammar" section), I teach students how to use visual clues in both the passage and the answers to 1.) identify the grammatical topic or stylistic consideration being tested and 2.) recruit from memory and apply the correct information to answer the question.

My students learn to rapidly and easily eliminate wrong answers and recognize the most commonly tested types of grammatical errors. Many of them report learning things "they never knew" about the rudiments of grammar and punctuation, and find their performance and confidence improve drastically!

Trigonometry

The keys to success in trigonometry are a strong grasp of 3-4 basic concepts (such as the unit circle, the concept of inverse functions, periodicity, and the pythagorean identity) and learning how to apply them to various situations. Too often students struggle with trigonometry because of the sheer number of different formulas and identities involved; under my tutelage, students learn how to generate and derive knowledge rather than simply memorizing and regurgitating it. I show them effective and reliable substitutions and content-based strategies to enable them to solve trigonometry problems with greater speed and accuracy.

I also offer intensive review for prerequisite math subject matter such as algebra, geometry and algebra 2. For physics students, I provide thorough coverage of trigonometry as it pertains to vector math as well as test-prep oriented review for students taking the SAT Math Subject test.

Vocabulary

The more you do with a word, the more likely you are to remember it. I use only the most up-to-date and cutting edge approaches to improve vocabulary. Traditional study methods such as flashcards, mnemonics and verbal puns are combined with the latest theories on learning and cognition to maximize retention and optimize recall on a test.

Writing

With a Master's Degree in Creative Writing and over 8 years of experience tutoring students for the SAT Writing section, I am uniquely qualified to help students with various writing projects.

Unlike the flat formulaic essays that result from forcing students to merely follow a formula, the essays I teach a student to write reveal the gradual development of a mature voice and distinct style.

First, I teach students instead about the components of any good essay (thesis statement, attention grabbing headline, transitions, flow, structure, creative language and compositional risks).

Next, I show them how to properly integrate supporting examples into an argument well as how to develop their argument to demonstrate critical thinking skills.

Finally, I show them how to properly edit and revise their essays to tighten up the language and enhance the tone of the essay.
