Currently, I'm an active French language and ESL tutor with several clients of various ages seeing positive results. Recently, I provided ESL tutoring services to a charter school in Newark, NJ for a multi-lingual student.
During my undergraduate studies, I trained with the School for International Training in Toulouse, France. I later obtained my Master of Arts degree in French from Middlebury College after an intensive, full immersion, year abroad in Paris, where I also took a certification course and exam in Business French at Novancia and classes at l'Université de Paris III (La Sorbonne Nouvelle).
While studying for my Masters, I acquired classroom experience in France, teaching English to French high-school students (equivalent of 1st year college in U.S.) on a political science track at the Lycée Paul Valery in Paris.
In the Philadelphia, I was facilitator of the Girl Scouts' Decisions for Life curriculum for middle school aged girls which led me to accept a permanent position at a charter school in Philadelphia and later a tutoring post in New York City.
While working in publishing, I founded a lunchtime French tutoring program and instructed editors at Essence Magazine. Most of my career has been focused in the creative field and I think this has given me some unique experiences from which to draw-- a plus when working with students. I am happily married to an educator of 11 years with experience in both New York and New Jersey as a teacher, administrator and instructional coach. The big smile after the session said it all! My daughter really enjoyed her first session with April. She loved her creativity and teaching style. As a senior taking French 3 after a one year layoff, she was not looking forward to the rustiness that was ahead of her. But as April said, "It's like getting back on a bike." My daughter enjoys her sense of humor and down to earth style and she felt that they had a lot in common outside of French. As a parent, I appreciated how professional and organized April was with what appears to be a great plan of action moving forward. We are both looking forward to a great working relationship. Thanks, April!
I am beyond pleased to hear this. Thank you! It's so rewarding to support a student who is passionate and excited about life and her studies. I look forward to a great year working together!
April is a fantastic tutor. She's funny, encouraging, smart and is very patient. She's adapted her teaching style to my learning style and she never makes fun of my pronunciation - and it is worth of having fun poked at it. She gently corrects and is very encouraging. I've really enjoyed our lessons and am learning a great deal. I highly recommend April.
April is a fine tutor and we learned a lot from her in French! I would hire her again in a second.
How wonderful to hear! Thank you. I hope your trip to France brought you joy and unlimited opportunities to use what you learned with me. Cheers!
April is an engaging and intuitive tutor who is able to assess one's language level quickly. She is always patient and encouraging, and we learned a lot in a very short time. Additionally, April is a lovely person with whom it is easy to spend several hours a week. I highly recommend April, both for her tutoring skills and her joie de vivre. Five stars!
Thank you for your positive feedback. This is very encouraging. I couldn't have asked for more engaging and inquisitive students! Working with you is refreshing for me as a tutor and one of the highlights of my week.
April turned out to be a great match for my 12-year-old daughter who had been having trouble with French in school. Literally, after the first two lessons with April, my daughter's grades shot up and have stayed up ever since. Thank you, April!
You are very welcome, Anna! It is a pleasure working with your daughter and seeing her marked improvements from the beginning of our sessions to now. Thank you for your feedback!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
