About Tom

Both teaching and tutoring are wonderful opportunities to nurture the thinking, writing, speaking, and collaborative skills of a young person. I love connecting with a student in a genuine way that provides the student with the space to make mistakes that they can learn from. This psychological safety net offers a very true insight into the individual as a learner and that is rewarding because I believe this gives the student space to grow, not only as a learner, but also as a person.

I've trained extensively in understanding the fundamentals of learner development at both Middlesex County College and New Jersey City University. I graduated MCC in 2013 with a 3.24 GPA and I graduated with a 3.49 from NJCU in May 2016.

During my time at MCC, I completed my Sophomore Practicum at Greater Brunswick Charter School in the fall of 2012. I worked to instruct students in both small-groups and whole-classes. I graduated with my Applied Arts & Sciences degree as an Education Practitioner.

I later became a substitute teacher with Source4Teachers where I worked in various schools throughout parts of Middlesex county, Ocean county, and Hudson county. I developed trust and rapport with all of the students I worked with,

After I transferred to NJCU, I completed my Junior Practicum in the fall of 2014. Again, I worked with both small-groups and whole classes, as well as one-on-one with students. I have also completed the Writing Internship in the fall of 2015, where I worked extensively with college students as a Writing Tutor. I am now completing my Student Teaching clinicals at an Academic High School.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

I've completed a variety of classes on English literature from a diverse background.

Reading

I am completing my degree in English with Secondary Education certification from NJCU.
