About Ron

At the beginning of my sophomore year in high school, I met a wonderful artist and photography teacher. His classes and style of teaching were inspirational to say the least. It was that class and instructor that changed my life forever. I pursued a career in photography and later television. Following a successful 17 year history in TV, I decided to cut the corporate ties and launch my own photography business.

For the last 26 years I have owned and operated a commercial studio that included clients like Disney, Campbells Soup, Hasbro Toys and many others. At this point in my career I look forward to the opportunity to teach others about the joys and rewards of photography. The digital age has changed the photography industry a great deal but it is very important to keep the fundamentals alive and well in the photographers of tomorrow. My desire is to help those who have a serious interest in improving their photographic skills and my curriculum is designed to do just that. My instruction is beyond simply learning how to take better pictures with the camera you got for Christmas.

I believe in adjusting any curriculum guidelines to meet the needs of specific students. Simply applying a standard course scenario to all students potentially risks wasting time and discouraging the student. I want to first get to know each student's current skill level and ultimate goals from the tutoring. I will base my instruction on meeting those goals for each and every student.

If you're really interested in learning advanced principles of photography then please contact me. I will provide extensive training in many different areas of image making from location shooting to studio commercial work. My instruction is for serious photography enthusiasts.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Desktop Publishing

I started desktop publishing many years ago with formal training in Ventura, an early DTP program by Xerox. Since the development of Quark Express on the Mac platform, I've been producing brochures, flyers and many other print oriented forms of media as an additional service in my business. I am now fluent with Adobe InDesign as well. I have designed, created and output numerous DTP projects and followed the production through the printing stage at various print facilities. I am well versed in print industry technologies and standards.

Macintosh

I've been working with Mac computers and the MAC OS since the early nineties. I've gone through numerous desktops and laptops and currently have an inventory of several systems including MAC PRO, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, iMac and Mac Mini. I also use the iPad and iPhone for photo related and business projects.

Photography

I've had my own commercial photography studio for 25 years. I studied photography in high school and college and majored in broadcasting. Upon graduation I worked at an ABC affiliated TV station and produced/directed a wide variety of programming. The blend of my photographic skills and expertise in the broadcasting field gives me a unique background for photography instruction in the digital age.

QuickBooks

I've been using QuickBooks for my business since the very first version was released in the early 1990's. I've worked with both Mac and PC Quickbooks platforms and use the program along with Turbo Tax to prepare my own tax returns each year. As a commercial business owner I use a majority of the QuickBooks accounting features (excluding payroll). I have assisted others in the use of Quickbooks and Quicken for financial management.

Video Production

I held the following positions at an ABC Network affiliated commercial TV station in Syracuse, NY. 1. Studio crew, (camera, audio, lighting, set construction). 2. Video engineer (First Class/General radio telephone certificate held). Control room operations and maintenance. 3. Producer/Director. Directed recorded and live tv programs including daily newscasts. Location commercial production. 4. Production manager - supervised the production department for 5 years.
Fluent in studio, location video set-up and recording with SD and HD digital equipment. I work with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier Pro and related sound editing - non/liner editing systems on Mac computers.
