In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated from Rowan University with my BA in Elementary Education. I also graduated with a dual major in Humanities and Social Science, sequence history and English. I taught in a 3rd grade class room, as a long term substitute, for the entire 2012-2013 school year. I was recently hired to the district to teach a 4th grade class at the same school.
I am completing my teacher of reading certification at Rowan University. I have taken many reading classes as well as tutored students during a course there. I completed a course titles Phonics and Spelling. I have administered the DSA, BRI, CRI, and running records. I have learned and practiced many reading strategies for word study, fluency, comprehension and writing. I have had experience with 1st graders during student teaching as well as taught in a 3rd grade classroom for a year and will be teaching 4th grade in the near future.
I am certified to teach K-6 and I have my Teacher of Reading certification. I have tutored many students of all ages in reading. I currently teach 3rd and have taught 4th as well. I am also involved in a before school program to help students prepare for state testing. During this time, I teach various reading lessons to a small group of students. Lastly, I collaborate with a first grade teacher to organize engaging reading lessons for our classes to do together as Book Buddies.
I have had many classes at Rowan for students with learning disabilities and IEPs. I am very aware of differentiated instruction and meeting the needs of the individual child. My 3rd grade classroom last year was inclusion class with resource teachers who came in to co-teach with me. Over the last two years I have worked with children who are visually impairs, have ADD/ADHD, are autistic and oppositional defiant.
In addition to my Elementary Education certification, I am completing my Teacher of Reading certification. This certification has prepared me to test student's levels in reading fluency, comprehension and spelling. It reinforces my skills and strategies to improve student's abilities in reading, spelling and writing.
Study skills was very important skills to master. In high school, I took a class called study skills and learned many tips for studying that I still remember to this day. I also have learned many test taking skills. I administer the NJ Ask to my 3rd graders and preparation and testing skills were a big help for the students. Different methods of study for better for different people and different subjects. Depending on the type of learner, some students benefit from flash cards, where others need to rewrite information to retain it, and others may need to have a visual connection or reference to help them grasp a concept.
