In my over twenty years of teaching, I have found that all students can succeed if they believe they can succeed and if they want to. My role as a teacher is to "sell" this concept to my students, as members of a class and as individuals. I have been successful at this most important sales job. My experience includes teaching students in urban, suburban, magnet, private, and public schools; teaching AP level, honors level, college prep level, and conceptual level courses; and teaching students with a variety of learning styles.
I know that students learn by doing, not by listening. My tutoring sessions are guided by "doing", with explanations and encouragement as needed. My goal in all of my teaching and tutoring is to eliminate the students' need for me. This does not always happen, but the students do become more confident, self-sufficient, and successful over time .This confidence extends into everything they do, not just their math or science courses.

Gail has been a wonderful tutor for our 8th grade daughter. She is patient, is able to reinforce the material in a way that is easily understood and is age appropriate. She is very flexible when asked to review a new topic without prior notice. Lastly she provides plenty of positive reinforcement to my daughter throughout the sessions. Gail was somewhat helpful and provided some strategies but she stayed much longer than I expected. I should have spoken up after the hour but I let her continue and ended up being charged for 2.5 hours when I only really wanted one hour. I also feel she should have asked if I wanted her to stay longer and pay for more than one hour.
There was a lack of communication. I was told to work with her wonderful daughter and her friend on physics concepts. Normally I would work 1.5 hours with a new student, but with 2 students, it always takes longer. (I did not charge for the second student.)
Gail is a very patient and kind individual and is providing my daughter with a renewed interest in algebra. We are very pleased with her tutoring.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
