About Harlan

I currently teach ESL at nights for "USA English Audiovisual School," in Plainfield, NJ. This gives me little time to tutor for Wyzant. But it does mean that I am very good at teaching English.

Most of my experience has been tutoring statistics for graduate students enrolled in non statistics programs. I learned what I know the hard way, and understand frustration many people have. All my tutoring experiences have been for classes with an integrated statistical computation element. This has been SPSS or SAS. I also know R and can teach you R as well. I also have used PIG, Oracle, SQL, DB2 and HIVEQL extensively in my day job.

I have taught pre-calculus, calculus, pre-algebra and statistics as well as run help sessions. I can teach you delta epsilon proofs for calculus if needed, or help you with abstract algebra, but at that point you should be studying with fellow students. I passed a couple of Actuary tests a number of years ago, that was in Calculus and Probability (100 and 110).

My goal is to give you an understanding of the material so you are comfortable with it and can then master the material. You will tell me what you know and let me see how you think about the material. If there is something that needs to be corrected or if you need additional understanding then I'll cover that. You will be the one driving the session, not me. I don't have any "easy" methods or short-cuts. Not because I am against that, but it is not my gift. I know others who can do that, so if that is what you want there are others who can provide it.

I can deal with people who are very frustrated, but still motivated.

If I do tutoring, I prefer helping those learning research statistics. But you need to post your ad in a subject area I am qualified by Wyzant to tutor.

I enjoy learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have a degree in mathematics as well as experience tutoring and teaching, including ACT Math.

Actuarial Science

I successfully completed exams 100 and 110 a number of years ago and these have been converted to credit for COURSE1 which gives me a conversion credit for exam P. Exam P is the very first exam and covers probability.

So, based on the fact I have passed exams 100 and 110, and those convert to Exam P, I should be able to help people with exam P. Exam P is only the first exam in the list of requirements given by the Society of Actuaries for certification.

Algebra 1

I have a masters and have taught algebra in college.

Biostatistics

I have formal university training in statistics.
This includes a masters degree in Statistics from the DePaul University Mathematics department in 1993. I also studied in a doctoral program at Northern Illinois University for three years. Coursework included Bio-statistics and the statistical methods studied include linear regression, survival models, random effects, repeated measures, longitudinal models and case control studies.

I have work experience as a statistical programmer and statistician.
This includes 6 years working in health services research for the Veterans Health Administration. I have also analyzed health outcomes for a few pharmaceutical companies.

I have tutoring experience.
I have tutored a number of people taking research methods classes for their nursing, marketing or psychology programs. These were all practical knowledge classes where the student learned descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, linear regression, survival models and case/control methods.

I am proficient with modern software.
I have years of experience using SAS, R, and SPSS. I also have a limited experience using STATA.

Calculus

I have taken Calculus I - III as an undergraduate and also Calculus I-II and real analysis as a graduate student. I taught Calculus I - II to undergraduate students.

Epidemiology

I have formal university training in statistics.

This includes a masters degree in Statistics from the DePaul University Mathematics department in 1993. I also completed core coursework in a doctoral program at Northern Illinois University over three years. Coursework included Bio-statistics and the statistical methods studied included case control methods, linear regression, survival models, random effects, repeated measures, and longitudinal models.

I have work experience as a statistical programmer and statistician.

I have also worked in Health Outcomes and Economics research for pharmaceutical companies and applied Adverse Event detection methodology.

I have many years of experience using SAS, R, and SPSS. I also have a limited experience using STATA.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL at USA English Audiovisual School in Plainfield, NJ, for three years. I currently teach two classes.

Mathematica

Mathematica is a symbolic and numerical system that uses functional programming concepts. I have a masters in Statistics, so I have used Mathematica for a variety of mathematical uses in my own education. I have also used Mathematica to teach Calculus I and II at a University. I used Mathematica to create illustrations I then projected them for the class to see. This helped me explain mathematical concepts. I have also read books on the programming style using in Mathematica applications.

Prealgebra

I have taught and tutored algebra and have taken abstract algebra as a graduate student, including Prealgebra.

Precalculus

I have taught precalculus to undergraduate students.

SAS

I started programming in SAS in 1998 and have programmed in SAS since then. I have a Masters in Statistics from DePaul University where SAS was used. At one time I also had the Base SAS certificate (version 8). I have done research using SAS. (16 years experience with modules Base and Stats).

SQL

I have over 10 years industry experience using SQL on a variety of platforms.

Statistics

I have a masters in statistics and have done statistical analysis for health research for over 10 years. I know the standard descriptive methods, regression modeling, survival analysis, time series analysis as well as other methods. I can help students taking research methods classes. I know SAS, R, SPSS, python and other analysis packages.
