Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am an English teacher and former journalist who specializes in teaching all types of writing skills. I am familiar with the requirements of the ACT Writing section, and can help you improve your scores on the multiple choice questions.

ADD/ADHD

I hold NJ Certification as Teacher of Students with Disabilities. In addition, I have successfully taught students with ADHD in middle school and high school classes. Both of my children have ADHD and I served as the president of my district's Special Ed PTO for 3 years.

Aspergers

I hold NJ Certification as Teacher of Students with Disabilities. As a middle school teacher, I successfully taught students who were classified as having Aspergers Syndrome. I also currently tutor high school students on the Autism Spectrum.

College Counseling

I have been a high school English and Special Education teacher for 25 years. In addition, I have taken graduate level courses in high school guidance and counseling as I worked towards a masters degree. I have successfully coached many students, teaching them how to brainstorm topics, organize and write a basic essay, and then rewrite it to gain the attention of admissions officers at their selected colleges. I work either in person or via email, using track changes on the essay and then discuss the changes with the student either in person, or via phone or Skype.

Cooking

I trained with a French chef and ghost-wrote his cookbook. I am familiar with a wide variety of regional cooking styles as well as specialized diet requirements. In addition, I am experienced in recipe development. I am an expert baker and cake decorator.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold NJ Teacher of Elementary Education certification. I spent 12 years as a substitute teacher in the Warren K-8 district. In addition, I have taught first grade, third grade, fifth grade, sixth grade and seventh grade classes at a certified Hebrew school.

English

I am a Special Education/English teacher and former journalist. I teach both critical reading and writing skills. Whether you are looking to learn to read more fluently, determine the main idea of a passage, master research writing skills, creative writing, or improve SAT scores, I can help.

Phonics

As a certified Teacher of Students with Disabilities, I am trained and experienced in teaching reading through the use of phonics. I have taught reading to both beginning readers and middle school readers using phonics as well as other reading methods. I am also certified to teach elementary school K-5.

Proofreading

I am a former newspaper reporter with extensive copy editing and proofreading experience. Currently, I am an English teacher with excellent grammar skills.

SAT Reading

I am an English and Special Education teacher. I am familiar with the requirements of the SAT Critical Reading section, and whether you are having trouble with main ideas, inferences, vocabulary or any other type of question, I can help you improve your scores!

SAT Writing

I am an English teacher and former journalist who specializes in teaching all types of writing skills. I am familiar with the requirements of the SAT Writing section, and can help you improve your scores on both the multiple choice questions and the essay.

Social Studies

As a special education teacher, I served as in-class support in history and social studies classes. In addition, I have 21 college credits in various areas of social studies.

Special Needs

I am NJ certified as Teacher of Students with Disabilities. I have extensive experience teaching students of all classifications, including ADHD, Aspergers, reading disabilities including dyslexia, and other learning disabilities. In addition, I have personal experience dealing with special needs, as my son has ADHD and other learning disabilities.

Study Skills

As a Teacher of Students with Disabilities, I have taught study skills in both middle school and high school classrooms. I have a vast collection of various materials to help students study more effectively, including SQ3R, using flashcards, and taking notes.
