About Laura

As an elementary and special education teacher, I love to enhance my student’s ability to “grasp” an academic learning requirement. I believe that teaching to the individual is what makes an outstanding teacher. I have many “hands on” activities that teach fractions, number lines, regions, and geometry. An example of this is “Fruit Loop fractions, paper paper plate fractions, sentence strips for number lines, walking and measuring a different classroom or space”. Reading is another area that I have enhanced my students ability by presenting material in new and unique ways that help students read and comprehend difficult reading material. Students need choices so that they may choose their own devise and exclusive learning style. An outstanding teacher never stops learning and continues to maintain high expectations of themselves and their students. An outstanding teacher is always using rigor, UDL, Center Activities, or any creative way to present and achieve excellent academic performance.

I have had many professional development classes as well as have presented professional development classes about the new Common Core. It is demanding but is very achievable when presented in a supportive academic learning environment. As a teacher for 12 years I know New Jersey's challenging academic expectations and can help students become successful.

I feel that an outstanding teacher always puts the student first. An outstanding teacher always supports a cooperative and supportive academic environment. I feel that one on one attention is necessary for each student to achieve their individual goals. I have the ability to understand and collaborate with administration and students. As a special education and elementary teacher I have taught a very diverse population. I am compassionate about the varied needs of students and their unique learning styles. I feel that it is important to “get to know” your students unique ability and understand what each child needs. I have worked in a behavioral development environment that also has allowed me to understand difficult and challenging opportunities for students.

I can help you be a successful student! I will address your individual learning skills and abilities. We will find a way of learning that works for you. I believe that it is important to offer many choices for learning so that we discover your unique learning style. It is important to teach to each student’s individual learning style and that requires understanding and getting to know the student. I know the importance of “hands on” and fun activities for successful academic achievement.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

As a New Jersey Certified Elementary and Special Education teacher for the last 10 years I understand how important critical and high order of thinking is with the New Common Core demands. I have taught K-5 mathematics including but not limited to: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, fractions, fraction number lines, equivalent fractions, fact families, word problems, drawing and solving equations for all grade levels. I have many unique ways of presenting this academic material so that students have fun learning and understanding these new mathematical concepts.
In Language Arts I have taught plot, setting, and characters, author’s purpose, comprehension, the use of graphics and visualization in order for students to understand the text they are reading. I know the importance of a solid reading background so that students can demonstrate their understanding of the text and how to explain and write their thoughts and feelings about stories, videos, and articles. I have taught language arts for over 10 years and know many interesting ways that help students retain and create engaging sentences that turn into wonderful paragraphs and finally completed assignments.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have three current New Jersey State certifications in teaching: Teacher of the Handicapped, Elementary School Teacher, and General Business Studies. I have taught elementary math and language arts students for the last 10 years and know how to use many different and unique learning strategies that allow students to be successful in the classroom.

Elementary Math

I have 12 years experience teaching special education math and language arts in elementary school. Six of those years were teaching 4th grade.

Handwriting

I have completed the Wilson Cursive writing and reading professional development workshops. I also know the importance of presentation of knowledge and ideas in writing that help students become better writers and readers as they grow. College and career writing and reading readiness are essential parts of the New Common Core requirements. I have interesting and challenging ways of presenting this academic requirement.
