I have had several careers in my life. First, an editor, then a professional musician, an Office Manager, and then a mother of a beautiful boy. I realized through raising him my joy of teaching and helping to inspire little kids to have a love of learning. My son is remarkable, but not typical, he has unofficially been diagnosed with Asperger's, which makes teaching him rather easy because he has a brilliant mind, but other things did not come as easily, such as delayed-language, social skills, etc. I had to get really creative to get him to concentrate on things that weren't as interesting to him, and I enjoyed seeing him grow and succeed. He is five years old and can already read, write, loves music, and has become much more creative. I'd like to help families who have similar challenges, and I hope that I can offer them some comfort and success in helping their kids get all they can from their education. I'd like to start with younger kids, elementary school age and move on from there.
I was always a very good student, and have been told that I should be a teacher. I haven't become certified, but would like to start tutoring to see whether this is the direction I should go. I have a son and take care of a 3 1/2 year old who also already knows her numbers, letters and is on her way to being ahead for school.
I studied phonetics in college, and also have musical training, so I have an ear for speech problems, and language difficulties. Also, I was an editor in a previous career, so I have a good working knowledge of grammar, sentence, structure, vocabulary, etc.
I know you may be looking for a certified teacher, but I'd like to have the opportunity to make a difference in another child's life besides my own. Many of my friends have wished that I was officially a teacher, and told me this was a path I should follow. I also will bring other discipline's into the experience, depending on the child -- music, art, pop culture, anything that makes them excited about what they're doing. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
