About Marlene

My name is Marlene and my motto is "Math is fun." You've heard that before and you may not agree but it's true. My goal is for my students to agree with this statement as well. We all learn differently and my focus is to present material in various ways to determine the best way for each student to master the material. Explanations are key and my approach includes detailed solutions where appropriate, that students can use as a guide to help learn the topic.

I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University and have spent my professional career in the insurance industry employed as an actuary. If you are not familiar with actuaries, the professional designations require successful passing of a series of 10 exams. The first four exams included college-level math such as Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis and Interest Theory. I have recently retired from the actuarial profession. I have taught classes in preparation for actuarial exams and have tutored students in math in many levels, including elementary and middle school math, high school math: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus, as well as College level Algebra, Statistics, Calculus and Linear Algebra. I love tutoring and seeing the smile on a student's face when they finally understand a topic with which they may have been struggling.

Algebra I, Algebra II and College Algebra
Algebra lays the foundation for all higher level math courses, both in high school and college. I have worked with both teens and young adults to help them master this important subject matter.

Geometry and Trigonometry
I am grouping these topics together because I see them slightly different than other math courses. Students who previously did well in math may suddenly be struggling. Conversely, students who always struggled with math may find Geometry and Trigonometry easier to understand. Geometry and Trigonometry are more visual than other math topics. Additionally working through proofs in Geometry requires the ability to think in steps and understanding why each step comes next in the process.

Pre-calculus, Calculus and Linear Algebra
These courses are a natural extension of algebra. I have successfully worked with students at both the high school and college levels in these courses.

SAT Math
SAT Math, in an of itself, is not that hard. It's based on Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II high school courses. What makes it difficult it the way in which the problems are presented. And the best way to be successful is to work through as many problems as possible. As an actuary, having attained the highest designation offered in the field, I understand test taking and will share test-taking strategies in addition to working through the material.

Math is unlike other subject. You can't just read it and take notes. It's a skill and is best mastered by practice. To me, this means working through as many problems as possible, and re-working them as many times as necessary until it becomes as natural as breathing.

I'd welcome the opportunity to speak with parents about their students' tutoring needs in math. Call me so we can meet and see if I can help your student.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Actuarial Science

I am a credentialed actuary holding the FCAS (Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society) designation. I am also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. In addition I taught exam preparation courses for CAMAR (Casualty Actuaries of the Mid Atlantic Region) for about 10 years.

Linear Algebra

I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University. I have previously tutored students in linear algebra at the college level. My approach to linear algebra is to understand why a methodology is correct, not just the correct steps. Understanding why helps students to determine the appropriate approach rather than just completing problems by rote.

Praxis

I have recently tutored students for the math portion of Praxis. With my experience in tutoring other elementary, middle school and high school math subjects, I can work with Praxis students to break down concepts in very simple, easy-to-understand terms for students who have not had a math course in a while. I have worked with students who have failed the Praxis (math) numerous times and have passed after working with me.
