In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught Elementary grades K-6 for ten years in the Philadelphia School District. I am familiar and follow core curriculum per grade and subject. I differentiate learning styles and methods to accommodate all learners. I use guided reading instruction to identify the struggling low level readers. I use many manipulative and a hands on approach to teach all types of learners.
As an Elementary school teacher I reviewed handwriting skills in third grade through sixth on a weekly basis. I modeled the handwriting objective on the smart board, guide students hand over hand and continue weekly practice. Students learn by seeing, doing and then through engagement. I wrote homework on the board in both forms and requested journal assignments be completed in cursive too. Practice is the key.
I have an Elementary Education and Special Education Certificates from both PA and NJ. My certification enables me to be highly qualifies in Teacher of the Handicapped, Students with Disabilities from grades K-12. My experiences in teaching all subjects on an individualized setting helps connect the development of learning so my students begin to think,feel and become productive individuals.
While teaching in Philadelphia, I taught an elementary study skills class. The class objective was to refresh basic study skills, reading with a highlighter, finding the main idea and using art to convey a lesson. I also worked individually with students in small guided groups. Small guided groups proved successful in teaching various study skill lessons.
