My name is Miguel and I am an elementary school teacher seeking tutoring opportunities . I have been teaching elementary school for four years and very much enjoy working with young students. I am comfortable working with students at all spectrum's within the classroom, whether they are below grade level or need enrichment opportunities. I believe that all students learn differently and that oftentimes misunderstandings arise when information is presented in only one way. As a tutor, I am capable of providing multiple approaches to concepts and patiently finding new ways to help your scholar access new concepts.
I am passionate about helping children achieve success in reading. Reading is the fundamental skill needed for a successful life in the 21st century, the skill needed to open opportunities. It's important to capture the attention of struggling students, to give them a purpose for reading beyond getting their schoolwork done. For this reason, I identify what the student is interested in and teach based on that interest. For example, one 7th grade student, reading on a 3rd grade level, wanted to learn how to draw dinosaurs. I had a book for that - a book that included a paragraph about the dinosaur before teaching how to draw it. He read the paragraph, learned some new vocabulary and facts, and then how to draw the dinosaur. Next he wanted to read about basketball and we read a great Matt Christopher book. We worked on phonics, spelling, vocabulary, sentence structure, summarizing, assorted comprehension skills, and confidence, overcoming fear, making mistakes and learning from them, and resiliency. We played many games, some in every session. We worked hard and had a lot of fun and laughs. By the school-year end he was on a 7th grade reading level and confident in his ability to learn. He no longer thought of himself as a failure.
My approach to tutoring, to teaching the wide variety of skills needed by fluent, successful readers, is to separate this learning process from the failures and difficulties of school. I teach students skills and how to learn, qualities that are needed in any situation. And, I try to make tutoring enjoyable, utilizing reading games to make learning fun and pressure free, advance skills and accomplishments, and change attitudes. I find ways to make each lesson a successful experience, ensuring that the student knows of this accomplishment, all the while challenging students with new skills and knowledge.
For me, reading is one of the greatest joys in life, taking me on adventures world-wide throughout time, teaching me about so many varied topics, helping me in times of trouble, and so much more. My wish is that everyone can experience this joy.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have a student that could benefit from my services. I look forward to working with your child. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified teacher in special education. I have been working with students that have ADHD/ADD diagnosis for over 4 years. I have implemented multiple teaching strategies and interventions to assist their learning.
In New Jersey Teachers must align their teaching utilizing common core. I am very familiar with common core teaching and strategies for the past several years. I have taught common core math, English and writing in my classroom. Common core allows children to think critically and problem solve on their own. I utilize multiple teaching strategies to help children learn. I am certified as a elementary education teacher in a public school.
I teach children how to write on a daily basis especially handwriting. Children are taught from basics (i.e. holding pencil proper way). As an experience educator I usually spend the entire year practicing with students on improving their handwriting. I have taught children to hand-write for several years which involves practicing and modeling for the students.
