I am an experienced tutor in mathematics and the mathematical sciences.
I have been a private tutor for over three years. I have privately tutored Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus, High-School Physics, College Level Probability & Statistics, College Level Elementary Computer Programming, ACT Math and SAT Math.
While in college and after graduating I was employed as an assistant instructor in a private tutoring company for seven months. There I tutored all levels of High School mathematics and SAT Math. In addition to this, I instructed multiple classes of 4-6 students. Some of the classes I instructed were an SAT Math Class, a pre-k Math/English Class, and a class on Lego Robotics.
As an undergraduate I studied Mathematics, with focuses in Quantitative Economics and Operations Research. I am experienced with Calculus, Ordinary Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Math Logic, and have taken up to Graduate Level Probability courses. In addition, I am well-versed in Statistics, Economics, and basic Computer Science. If you are in the Trenton area and looking for an experienced tutor with flexible hours, feel free to contact me. My daughter was struggling with Geometry and the midterm exam was just a few days away. We were in a bit of a crisis. Alan was quick to respond and immediately set up tutoring sessions to help her prepare for the exam (and long term success). He was very patient and was able to really help her grasp the concepts that she was struggling with. She went into the exam very confident thanks to his help!!!
My son is finicky about tutors. He and Alan really connected. Finding the right rotor is about both content knowledge and interpersonal rapport. Alan has both. On the way home my son told me Alan teaches him more than his math teacher.
Alan was very patient and guided me to the correct process to solve the problems that I was unsure of. He wasn't mean and condescending like my previous tutor. I know that I will do much better in my class with his help and guidance.
Quickly analyzed previous SAT data to identify weaknesses. Effective and efficient with problem review and clarified understanding for my son.
My son was struggling to maintain a low B in high school math. With Alan he has improved to an A. I highly recommend Alan.
Alan was very patient teaching my son math. He was encouraging and helpful. We plan on seeing him on a regular basis.
Alan was available in a short time frame and went through a lot of information in the short time we had together
Alan met with my son tonight for the first time. It was so convenient that he could come to our local library. My son was a little skeptical and resistant to tutoring, but really needed some help filling in the gaps of things he has missed in Algebra 2 honors. After this first hour he was absolutely won over. Alan was excellent in explaining tough concepts he has been missing all year. My son left with some important work completed and a boost of confidence heading into his next test. Totally worth the time and money!
Alan has been tutoring my daughter in per-calculus once a week for 1-2 hours each session. My daughter is an "A" student, but after 3 weeks of pre-calc resulted in 3 failed weekly quiz grades, she realized she needed help - and fast! After finding WhzAnt website (love Google) it took me less than 30 minutes to have an our first tutoring appointment with Alan scheduled! Alan was amazingly quick on the communications which made entire process so easy. The day after their first session, my daughter got an 83% on her weekly quiz... her highest grade prior to that was a 68%. The results continued to progress and my daughter now has a stretch goal to pull out an "A" in pre-calc.
Alan taught 10th grade algebra. My grandson had given up trying to learn it. After one hour of working with Alan, he had a new confidence and higher self esteem. My grandson could not wait to show me, that he could now do his current homework. He was very excited to be meeting with Alan next week. Alan took the fear out of learning. My grandson now knows, he can learn this subject. Alan was also polite, very well groomed and a very nice young man.
My son's experience with Alan has been phenomenal. He is a wonderful teacher and tutor, and extremely knowledgeable. I would highly recommend him to anyone on this site. Thanks!
Alan was patient and confident in my daughter's first session with him. He set the pace of the lesson, slowing her down and helping her to focus and analyze the math problems rather than just arriving at the answers.
Alan was a huge help in preparing me for my microeconomics final. I was struggling with some concepts that he helped me see in a much easier light. He was able to take difficult concepts and make them seem a whole lot more simple. Highly recommend Alan as a tutor.
Alan is an excellent Teacher Really enjoy tutoring. Alan has lot of patience and ensure the kid gets all the fundamental correct. My Son was weak in Calculus. Alan has helped him to improve his grade. calculus is one of the Favorite subjects to my son. All the credit goes to Alan.
Alan did a really good job at helping me understand where I was having problems in the different formulas I was working with in a College Algebra class.
Was very patient with me and did a good job preparing me for my final exam. I will definitely recommend Alan to anyone.
Alan taught Math classes for my sons. He is very punctual, knowledgeable and very helpful. Alan Is able to tackle tough subjects with his students and make them very clear and manageable. He is an excellent tutor, very easy to learn from, and patient. He is able to get into the mind set of his students and teach them according to their knowledge levels, individual traits and abilities. I highly recommend Alan. He has really been a huge help with math review, explaining problems carefully and with simple explanations.
Alan helped Olyvia complete her summer Math packet. He helped Lyv to understand the 2 pages that Lyv had issues with.
He was amazing at Geo and he was very confident with the work. He was the type of teacher that seemed to know what he was doing. He was able to stay for 3 and more hours.
Alan is an excellent tutor. My grandson was having a difficult time with college statistics and Alan was able to help him understand and achieve a much better grade. He is patient and extremely knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend Alan and we are extremely happy with his tutoring skills.
Alan is very knowledgeable of the subject matter and related well with my son. With my sons exam next week we cannot wait for the next session.
Alan was patient, courteous and very knowledgeable! He was of great help in teaching and helping me understand my school work and i'm looking forward to working with him throughout the remainder of my class.
Alan went over special right triangles, (aka 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 right triangles). They worked on the trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, and tangent) and angle of elevation. They also did examples with the inverse trigonometric ratios and showed how they could be used to solve a triangle.
It was my pleasure working with Alan today. He explained it very well I understood him. We reviewed the material, he was calm didn't lose his cool. I will hire him again.
Alan has helped my daughter prepare for the math portion of the SAT's over the past month. My daughter feels more confident since she has been working with him. She feels he has helped her to gain a better understanding of the material. He is always prompt and pleasant. I would definitely recommend him as a math tutor.
Really helped me understand statistics and pass all my tests. Wouldn't have been able to get a good grade without him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
At Rutgers University I took courses in differential equations and partial differential equations. I achieved A's in both classes, and have assisted students with more complex mathematics in the past as well.
As an undergraduate I took multiple classes in regression analysis, time series modeling, and other econometric techniques. I currently work full time as an economist where statistics and econometrics are frequently used. While econometrics and other economic forecasting techniques can be difficult, I find it is best taught by having a firm grounding in statistics and eventually working up to more advanced theories.
Geometry is often the first time a student is introduced to formal logic and proof-based arguments, making it one of the most unique mathematics courses in a student's career. But with clear explanations and simplified examples, I can help make the new concepts introduced in geometry easily understood.
I have taken courses on formal logic and mathematical logic as an undergraduate, and have tutored predicate calculus and formal logic as well. Some of my methods include helping define logic in more concrete terms for students who may have trouble with abstract concepts, as well as illustrating numerous examples of the laws of logic, types of reasoning, and inductive proofs to help students get a feel for the material. By working from the ground up, and building a students reasoning first through simple logical statements, logical connectives, and quantifiers, I am able to help my students understand difficult concepts by building on simpler ones. When I work with a student they are able to build up their own logical intuition and formalize it easily.
