Hello. As a certified elementary/science teacher and Mom of a precocious 5 year-old, I have years of experience guiding students to learn. I have been teaching middle school science for the past 3 years and volunteering with my daughter's class when I can. I received a BS in Environmental Science from Stockton College in 2001 and returned to school in 2012 to obtain my teaching credentials through Rider University. I have held various customer service, retail, and administrative jobs, before dedicating myself to helping students be the best they can be and I am always reading about new research and techniques to help students cope and grow with the subject matter.
The best part about working with children is to see their eyes light up when they finally understand something well enough that it clicks in their mind. Sometimes it takes a lot of work to get there and sometimes there is just one key component that is missing. When I teach, I try to guide students to that understanding on their own terms, let them know it is OK to not get it at first but it is not OK to give up. I enjoy working with students to build confidence in their ability to keep trying and researching to be able to get over educational hurdles and become self-reliant learners. Hello. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor in the Common Core, because I am a certified k-6 Elementary teacher. I am also familiar with the standards as part of my teacher preparation training. And I know where to go for resources online for the common core.
As a middle school teacher, my classes would work on study/organization skills in class by being given the opportunity to try out various ways to take notes and prepare for assessments and as time progressed choose for themselves what worked for them. I would also give my students time during lunch or after school to come in for individual instruction and study skills practice if they were struggling with a topic.
