About Marion

I am a friendly, patient and knowledgeable person who loves working with students to improve their reading, writing, grammar and test prep skills. I especially like teaching students my special techniques to conquer the reading and writing sections on the SAT and ACT. My special techniques are very easy to learn and they take the stress out of learning and make it fun. Moreover, my techniques build the student's self-confidence. My method if teaching these techniques are simple. First, I test the student to determine their level of comprehension, retention and writing style. I then start at that level and teach them my techniques to step them up to their top level of performance. I have been using these techniques for more than 19 years in helping students improve their reading, writing and test-taking skills. I would also like to tell you that I am a lawyer who have devoted my time to helping young people succeed in life. Taking tests successfully are an integral part of achieving success. As a lawyer, I know how to read thoroughly and quickly, analyze what I have read, pick out the important facts and write succinctly yet comprehensively. I teach these skills to the students. I received my J.D. degree from the University of Akron School of Law where I trained in their excellent trial litigation program. I received my B.S. degree in journalism from Rutgers University, Cum Laud, and worked as a general assignment reporter. I know how to use the written word. I would like to teach you to do the same. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I have been a practicing attorney for more than 19 years in the each of the areas tested on the Bar Exam. For the past 17 years, I have volunteered my time tutoring law students to pass the New Jersey Bar Exam and the Multi-State exam. I know what the bar examiners are looking for, and therefore I teach students how to spot issues, structure the information, and write the essays. With regards to the Multi-State, I teach students a spot and analyze technique so they can select the best possible answer. I have tutored students who attended Rutgers Law School - Newark and Camden, Seton hall, New York Law and Temple University.

Career Development

In 2003, I created a program for young people between the ages of 14-18 called Legal Steps. I created the program because as an attorney who has worked with young people for more than 19 years, I believe young people who have goals will avoid getting into trouble. That is why I designed the program to teach young people how to identify and avoid illegal situations and to understand how the legal consequences of their actions can affect their future. Included in this program is career development and college counseling. I work with the youth to identify their career goals and develop a plan to achieve those goals. In doing so, we assess their interests, strengths, weaknesses, and work to improve in those areas that are challenging to them. Those areas include writing college essays, personal statements, and preparing for entrance exams. Additionally, I teach the youth how to research careers to learn what that career entails, the degree earned, the length of time to earn that degree, courses studied, qualifications to pursue that degree, and job outlook. The youth further learn how to complete college applications and select references. The youth further learn what colleges are seeking in candidates and how they can meet that criteria. Moreover, I teach youth how to research colleges and to select the college that best meet their goals. My goal is to empower youth with knowledge about the law, themselves and how to plan and achieve your goals. I have taught my program to youth in schools, community organizations and youth programs.

College Counseling

In 2003, I created a program for young people between the ages of 14-18 called Legal Steps. I teach youth how to complete college applications and select references. The youth further learn what colleges are seeking in candidates and how they can meet that criteria. An important component in the program is called, "having a Presence and Making a Statement." That component concentrates on communication skills and appearance. Students learn how to dress and conduct themselves during a college interview. We have mock interviews where students polish their skills. I also speak with youth about financial aid and scholarships. The youth research the aid and scholarships that are available from the college, state, and federal government. They also identify organizations that offer scholarships as well. I teach the students how to write for scholarship information and apply for it. My goal is to empower youth with knowledge about the law, themselves and how to plan and achieve your goals. I have taught my program to youth in schools, community organizations and youth programs.

Public Speaking

I received my B.S. degree in Journalism and mass Communication is 1988 from Rutgers University; and, I received my J. D. with an emphasis in trial litigation from the University of Akron in 1992. Accordingly, for over 25 years I have been speaking to community groups, organizations and social programs on topics that involve social issues, family issues, and juvenile issues. Additionally, I have been giving persuasive arguments in courts for more than 19 years.
