If the student is being tutored in more than one subject, a reduced rate can be negotiated.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have over 20 years of experience on the Elementary Education level. I hold a Standard Teaching(K-8) Certificate in the State of New Jersey and have taught in the Trenton Public Schools System for nearly 8 years. I taught primarily 3-8th grade, all subject areas.
I feel that introducing the skill along with sufficient practice in class with a few problems done alone tend to work best. In addition, the previous day's materials are reviewed the next day to ensure understanding. Once the homework is reviewed and explained, a Mastery Test is given before the next skill is introduced.
Study habits are essential for success in school. To begin use a quiet, well-lighted area, free of noise and distractions(cell phones turned off, no Ipods, television...). I prefer the library for a more academic atmosphere. For the younger students, the public library is a good basis for preparing for a more rigorous academic schedule. For older students, because of the numerous resources available, a community college or college library has all the "supplies" needed to ensure completion. Next, have all materials readily available and sit upright, no slouching, at a table or desk with feet on the floor and seated in an upright position.
It is best to review materials for about 45 minutes, depending on the subject area and comfort with the topic. Take a few minutes after to absorb material and have a break. Then, return to studying. One shouldn't study for more than 1.5-2hours at a time to ensure maximum retention.
Aides are also useful for concrete learners(flash cards, lists, highlighting...). "Practice" tests also ensure material mastery and prepare the student for a variety of question types(multiple choice, fill-ins, true/false and essays), length of testing time and retention of material.
