Hi, my name is Catharina! I have been an SAT/PSAT Critical Reading and Writing specialist in the Princeton/West Windsor area for 8 years. My educational background includes a BA from the Univ. of Illinois as well as an MA from the Univ. of Wisconsin (Summa Cum Laude). There is no greater satisfaction for me than learning that my students have gotten into their first-choice school with a good financial package by maximizing their SAT scores. I have dedicated my career to helping my students achieve this goal.
In preparation for the rigorous challenges of the 2016 NEW SAT, I have studied the format and numerous facets of the new "evidence based" exam for several months. I believe that my preparedness has maximized my students' ability to comprehend and perform well on the NEW SAT.
In coaching for the SAT Reading and Writing Test, I tailor my intensive work to each individual student to maximize his/her skills while eliminating critical weaknesses. As we work together, I make ongoing progress assessments and continuously adjust my tutoring strategies accordingly.
In the Reading section, I teach my students how to be active, predictive readers. Even in the NEW SAT the questions are written with traps and diversions. I teach my students to recognize these pitfalls while searching out the hidden clues to accurate answers. I also direct my students in a modest plan for vocabulary development appropriate to the NEW SAT.
In preparation for the Writing portion of the exam, I teach my students the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation and proper usage in an accessible way. As the new Writing portion of the SAT is predominantly passage based, I teach my students how how to make the numerous difficult editing decisions related to the style and content of a passage. Finally, I teach my students how arrive at the test site psychologically and physically prepared to take the test without anxiety or fatigue -- and then manage time and energy optimally during the exam.
I try to keep our sessions challenging, but not overwhelming, and I assign homework after every lesson. I am dynamic, engaging and have great rapport with my students. Finally, and most importantly, I give them the preparedness and confidence that will allow them to 'nail' their test. Hi, my name is Catharina! I highly recommend Catharina S. She is patient, knowledgeable, flexible and kind. I highly recommend her! She has pinpointed the areas my son was struggling with, and has turned him around.
Catharina worked with my son as he prepared for the SAT this past summer. She is extremely well prepared and punctual. She structures her lessons on both learning how to take the test and strengthening skills where your child needs improvement the most. She is very patient and does a fantastic job of explaining concepts while providing rationale for her teaching points. I highly recommend Catharina and I know my child benefited greatly from the experience !!!
My daughter has studied SAT with Catharina for more than a year. She helps my daughter a lot in improving scores in critical reading and writing. My daughter feels more confident after taking lessons with Catharina. I highly recommend her for any SAT students.
Catharina is always on time. She has been accommodating with my son's schedule. I find her to be knowledgeable in teaching the English SAT. My son's vocabulary is improving as well as his comprehension in reading. I missed rating some of the lessons. This tutor is a five star teacher!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In preparation for the SAT Reading Test, I tailor my work to each individual student to efficiently maximize his/her success in every way. My work begins with a brief initial assessment of my student's prior performance in PSAT and/or SAT Tests (a detailed ETS report is always helpful, but not essential) as well as work with a few Sentence Completion questions and questions from a brief Passage. I utilize this information and student feedback to target areas of weakness.
I work very efficiently and responsively to teach my students:
1. How to understand the underlying components of the passages and questions (including identifying the main idea, negotiating line-reference and vocabulary-in-context questions, correctly identifying tone and attitude, and addressing analytical/inference questions).
2. How to apply a variety of effective reading/notating/scanning strategies chronologically to answer questions correctly and complete the sections in time.
3. How to locate the hidden clues pointing to correct answers.
4. How to recognize and avoid the numerous intricate traps and lures in both the questions and the answer choices.
Additionally, vocabulary development is an essential component of SAT Critical Reading score improvement. My work in vocabulary is based on an understanding of my student's proficiency and his/her most effective memorization and comprehension style - taking into account the preparation timetable. Vocabulary development leaves a student with a significant long-term benefit as a college student and future professional as well.
I have been highly successful in improving my students' scores because: I continuously research the most diverse up-to-date strategies and working materials and include private resources based on my experiences as a tutor; I allocate prep time according to my student's strengths and weaknesses; I teach my students how to reduce test taking anxiety and manage time optimally in the exams; I am an engaging teacher with a great sense of humor, attuned to my students' personalities, and I am a terrific confidence-building coach! I guarantee that I will efficiently guide you to achieve results in the Critical Reading component of the SAT Test.
