About Peter

My name is Peter, I have been tutoring since January and started substitute teaching two years ago while in college. I am looking to bring on a few more students since the school year is over and I want to help students continue learning during the summer, a time where for most it is certainly lacking.

First and foremost I thoroughly enjoy working with people and tutoring is a natural extension of this. My tutoring technique revolves around making tough and difficult topics fun and approachable, while helping to instill a sense of discipline and a strong work ethic. Students look to a tutor because they have approached a wall, and it is my job to help break that wall down and without some level of enjoyment in the learning process I don't believe this to be possible. Students can look forward to a low stress environment that will help them to work harder and achieve more. My hope is that a student will walk away with a preponderance of knowledge in the subject he or she is looking to improve upon and look forward to tackling problems they find challenging. Additionally I am experienced with working with students using a plethora of hearing (my explanations and examples) and visual aids ( illustrations, video, and cooperative learning techniques).

My credentials:

I have a BA in Political Science and History from Rutgers University and have been substitute teaching for two years and tutoring for six months (some of which was with another teacher whom I assisted), more specifically I have experience working with elementary students K through 5 and high school students grades 9 through 12. For elementary students I have tutored basic addition, spelling, writing, grammar, and reading comprehension. For high school students I have tutored students for the SAT (all sections). I also am able and willing to assist students in the following areas: HESPA, History, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, and English.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
