While teaching and tutoring for 18 years, I have taught in both elementary and middle school settings. My experience has included teaching special education students, gifted and talented students, and ESL students. My concept of tutoring is to make the experience enjoyable for the student. Most students do not want to be sitting for an hour doing "extra" school work. However, I am very inventive in establishing creative lessons to keep the student's attention while covering all required concepts. I bring a large "bag of tricks" that allows me to express the topics in a variety of ways. Therefore, the students can view how this information can be seen in many different facets of our world.
My expertise is in Language Arts and Social Studies. However, it is not limited to just those two subject matters. I have taught every subject in the elementary school and have tutored in all areas of the core curriculum.
After every lesson, I will explain to the parent all that was completed, improvements that have been made, and express any concerns that will need continual work. I will keep a running assessment of progress through out the tutoring sessions.
I do not limit my tutoring to those who are struggling. Many of my former clients have had sessions to challenge their child. I had lessons that were grade levels ahead of the student to create stronger skills and guide them to become more confident in his/her studies.
I enjoy what I do and hope to make learning as enjoyable for your child, as well! While teaching and tutoring for 18 years, I have taught in both elementary and middle school settings. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
