For the Love of Words
For as long as I can remember, I have been in love with words. When I first read Coleridge's poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" in 8th grade, I fell in love with language, the manipulation of words as a means to affect an audience. Whether we manipulate language to communicate with one another or to compose a specific piece of writing, we start with words. Through words, we make our entrance into the world; through words, we chronicle our experiences, our ideas, our understanding, and sometimes we even create personal masterpieces.
I received my B.A. in English at New Mexico State University where I also completed my Master of Arts in English. During graduate school there, I worked in the Writing Lab, was an editor for the university literary journal Puerto del Sol, and taught classes as a teaching assistant. I earned my Master of Fine Arts in English at Warren Wilson College with an emphasis in creative writing. For me, though, all writing is creative.
I taught a wide variety of courses at New Mexico State University after receiving my MFA including two remedial English classes at the Dona Ana Community College at NMSU, Effective Communication Skills and General Composition, as well as Freshman Composition, Business Writing, Technical Communication, Writing Across the Humanities, Imaginative Writing, and the Creative Writing/Poetry Workshop, all on the main campus. More recently, I have been teaching English online for Grand Canyon University based in Phoenix, AZ. Again, my teaching experience has been diverse: Academic Writing, Freshman Composition I and II, Advanced Composition, American Literature I and II, and The Short Story I and II.
By helping students learn how to read and write critically, whether it's to strengthen their skills for current classes or to prepare them for college, in the process, they become better critical thinkers, a valuable skill they will use in every area of their lives. Creative writing, too, helps students develop expressive writing strategies which carry over into nearly all forms of academic writing.
I have always encouraged my students to trust their own voices, and my greatest satisfaction comes when they discover they have a voice that is both unique and valid. Through words and our manipulation of them, we all find our voices.
11th grade English was a struggle for our son. A demanding curriculum consisting of advanced grammar, complex writing, and sophisticated literary analysis soon found him far behind, apathetic, and feeling defeated. We discovered Sue on the WyzAnt site and after reviewing her credentials and several subsequent e-mails, we solicited her assistance. Sue’s depth of knowledge and educational skills became evident immediately. After assessing the situation, she was able to quickly devise a plan that allowed him to methodically work through the process of completing the mound of work that lay before him. Key to his success was Sue’s ability to form a trusted relationship with our son. Her talent as a tutor/mentor may be described as nothing less than extraordinary. Through this partnership, our son was able to complete a large quantity of high quality work that astonished both his teachers and school administrators alike. We strongly recommend any parents looking for a capable and effective tutor for their child to consider Sue. I’m certain that you too will be very please by the results.Judie & George, 7 lessons with Sue
Great experience with Miss Sue!
I have had a great experience with Miss Sue as my tutor. She is kind and extremely helpful. Miss Sue knows what she is doing and always has great resources and different assignments when she tutors me. I was skeptical about having a tutor because I didn’t think it would do anything to actually help me improve, but I was wrong. Miss Sue is also great for helping out with assignments. I had to do a paper on a book for summer reading and I was having problems with it. Without even reading the book, she was a huge help and made it go by a lot easier. She is an excellent tutor and I am lucky to have found her.Parker, 7 lessons with Sue
Sue C. is a wonderful tutor. Sue gave me perfect amount of guidance so that I can write an effective personal statement. Sue asked thought provoking questions to get a better understanding of what I wanted to say and helped me focus on the important parts of the story. Sue helped me to organize my thoughts so that I could be a better writer and ultimately, complete my personal statement. Thank you!Alene, 2 lessons with Sue
Very warm, kind, and professional.
Sue is very accommodating and very professional. She would find a way on how to help out. She's very calm and warm to students like me. She would not only give techniques, she'll give friendly advice. She's an asset to Wyzant. She also expresses concern to students.Cherry, 1 lesson with Sue
Sue C. was my tutor for about 8 weeks and tutored me on essay writing. First I like to start out by saying how comfortable I felt with Sue. I learned a lot from Sue, she has great communication skills and was always on time and reliable. We mainly worked on my final essay, but she also had helped with some discussion questions. All the assignments that we work on including my final essay, I got a hundred percent on. My final grade in that class was a 94 %. I know I couldn’t of done it without Sue’s knowledge and support. I recommend her highly and I will definitely use her again in the future.Denise, 8 lessons with Sue
We were so happy & pleased to have found Sue to help our son. Sue helped him prepare for his next step in life... college. Not having much experience with writing papers in high school, Sue was able to assess our son, evaluate what type of help he needed, & taught him. My son enjoyed working with Sue, and my husband & I were pleased with what she taught our son, & her follow up with us. Sue is a very pleasant & professional tutor & I would highly recommend her for any other students in the family & our friends' children.Anne, 13 lessons with Sue
