About Maureen

My goal is to help each child reach their full learning potential.

As far back as I can remember, I was passionate about learning. I've turned this passion into an enthusiasm for teaching. The gifted teachers I was fortunate enough to learn from were my most influential role model and passed on the gift of knowledge.

I have over ten years of experience tutoring and teaching, and I love helping children learn. My background as an educator spans from teaching students aged kindergarten to eighth grade in both public and private school settings. In addition, I have worked in both regular education settings and settings tailored to children with diagnosed learning differences. Teaching such a wide variety of students has made me aware that it is paramount to adapt to individualized learning styles. Therefore, one of my favorite aspects of tutoring is having the time and attention to develop new, creative ways to enable the individual child I am working with to succeed. I tailor each lesson to meet the individual needs of the student.

Due to my work with children with learning differences, I am trained in several specialized, multi-sensory programs to address learning challenges such as Wilson Reading, Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell, Visualizing and Verbalizing, Handwriting Without Tears, Seeing Stars Math, Touch Math and Hochman Writing. The majority of my tutoring experience has been in working with children with language based learning differences such as dyslexia and auditory processing disorder. However, I am also familiar with current standardized grade level curriculum and have worked with many regular-education children needing a little extra boost.

Finally, if needed, I am very comfortable interfacing with classroom teachers, administration, and child study teams.
My goal is to help each child reach their full learning potential.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I am trained in Wilson reading, Orton Gillingham, and Lindamood Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing. I taught at a school for children with language based learning differences for three years, and I taught a self-contained class for children with learning differences for two years. My most recent position was as the coordinator of the special education program at a private Waldorf school. In my time teaching and tutoring I have also developed a working knowledge of Handwriting without Tears and other multi-sensory programs.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have spent the past 12 years working with elementary aged children in various capacities. I am a certified elementary teacher, and I received a certificate of excellence for my high score on the Praxis exam. I have a good knowledge of current grade level curriculum and requirements.

Handwriting

I have spent the past 10 years working with children with language based learning differences. Often, handwriting difficulties accompany learning problems. I have received on the job experience working with children with dysgraphia and am aware of accommodations that can make handwriting easier. Further, I have used Handwriting Without Tears in the classroom as well as Dragon Naturally speaking to help students' writing fluency.

Phonics

I am trained in Wilson reading, Orton Gillingham, and Lindamood Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing. I taught at a school for children with language based learning differences for three years, and I taught a self-contained class for children with learning differences for two years. Writing

Writing is not a natural process (we do not write the way we speak), therefore children often struggle grasping this academic concept.
I use a systematic, effective program that teaches sentence/paragraph/essay structure.
This system enables students to master the skills that are essential if they are to become competent writers.

The basic components of the program are:

Sentence strategies to build complexity and clarity
Outlines to develop well-structured summaries, paragraphs, expository and argumentative essays, and research papers
Revisions to enhance unity and coherence
As students learn how to use these tools, their writing improves together with their ability to think analytically.
