SUNY Purchase College (Music Performance)
I am Chris Hanson, a 28 year-old guitarist and teacher living in the Bergen County Area. I am offering guitar and music-theory lessons to your home.
I have over 12 years of teaching experience and have taught over 200 students representing all age groups in that time. I began playing at age 8 and began teaching at age 16. I attended The Music Conservatory at SUNY Purchase College and have a degree in classical guitar performance. My musical background consists of a wide variety of styles including (but not limited to) popular music, folk, rock, blues, jazz and classical. I currently play with several bands as well as perform solo acoustic shows publicly and for private events.
I truly love teaching and make a conscious effort to be fully present as each student has different goals, needs, and styles of learning. I am more than happy to respond to emails or texts but would love a phone call where we can simply talk about what you have in mind and see if it's a good fit.
I look forward to hearing from you :)
Music is such a varied field. There are so many styles and people interested in learning music can have so many different agendas. As a guitar teacher I feel this is particularly true, as it is such a popular instrument yet used in very versatile ways to across many genres. That said, music itself has a core language, and like language it can be analyzed and understood as well as developed intuitively through experience and feedback. I have a strong understanding of the many skills that go into learning any instrument (Theory, Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, Physics of Sound, Ipmrovisation etc) and I like to bring those abstract concepts full-circle to the practical application of playing an instrument with a specific emphasis on connecting to the "voice" of the guitar...creating a relationship with the instrument.
I was diagnosed ADD/ADHD as a child however at this point in my life I don't consider myself to have any symptoms and am not taking medication. I have a very compassionate and understanding personality and have taught many students with ADD/ADHD throughout the years. Music can particularly be very good for people with ADD/ADHD.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
