About Walt

My name is Walt. A long, long time ago, I graduated from high school in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Wandering through a year at New Mexico State University as a History major, the events of the world around me precluded any real commitment to academia on my part. The year was 1968.

Not wanting to miss any of the real history that was being made by my generation, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. I served with Marine infantry battalions in Vietnam, the Philippines and Okinawa. I saw firsthand the terrible consequences of misguided foreign policy and corporate militarism. I also discovered the true meaning of courage, sacrifice and personal honor.

Upon return from military service, I enrolled at the University of New Mexico. There, I earned a degree in English with an Art minor. In the intervening years I have made my way through a variety of both blue and white collar jobs. I have written three novels, a short story collection, a play and many, many poems. With the exception of a poetry chapbook, editorial journalism in the Bergen Record (NJ), and a bunch of letters (the Record, NYT-on-line, New Mexico Magazine, etc.), I'm an unpublished - but still active - writer.

I've also raised two sons and now have three grandchildren. My life has provided me with nonstop opportunities to teach, tutor and mentor. I managed baseball teams for thirteen years, working with boys and girls from age five to thirteen. I currently am involved with the Combat Paper Project, working as a papermaker and printmaker with young veterans of the Afghan and Iraq Wars.

I believe the role of the tutor is to not only impart subject information, but to provide a context for learning. To frame the stories of English or History or Art into the living world that is happening now, I think, is the key to successful teaching. As a tutor, I strive - with patience and good humor - to establish dialogue.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
