Ithaca College (Writing)
I have a passion for language, composition, and communication. Over the past several years, I've developed easy-to-understand techniques for translating this passion into language skills for students. I enjoy connecting with all different learning styles, and I love to see real learning take place.
I earned my bachelor's degree in 2013 – Writing, with a minor in Spanish, from Ithaca College. I began my career as an educator during my junior year at IC, tutoring peers in Spanish and essay writing. During my senior year, I taught a class in Music & the Arts at a nearby juvenile corrections facility. Since graduating in 2013, I've maintained tutoring in Spanish and English; in May 2015, I began studying and teaching the verbal sides of the ACT and SAT.
I look forward to talking about how I can help improve your or your child's performance in these subjects.
After first learning Spanish in school, I honed my skills during a college semester in Spain. In my studies, domestic and abroad, I completed the full course of Spanish language classes and began to study Spanish and Latino literature and film. Today, I converse with family who are native Spanish speakers. Having learned and taught the language academically, and having spoken it in daily conversation, I now have a sharp sense for how Spanish functions, both inside and outside the classroom.
I have a passion for composing great written materials and a keen understanding for how language functions – from acute grammar and usage to the larger structure of a piece. Through my studies, I've learned many ways for practicing, improving, and enjoying reading and writing which I have applied to tutoring for the ACT/SAT and other verbal subject areas.
I look forward to speaking with you about how I can be helpful to you or your child in these subjects. Please contact me! I have a passion for language, composition, and communication. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a B.A. in Writing from Ithaca College. 4 years experience tutoring/teaching, with 1 year experience tutoring the ACT.
I've studied music and been an active musician since I was in grade school. I played trumpet and sang in chorus in high school; in college I learned piano and took a course in composition. I'm very familiar with music theory and composition concepts, including: voice leading, form, harmonic rhythms and cadences, chord progressions, harmony melody, etc. I've composed several pieces myself. I love music and would love to tutor in it!
I taught a course in Music & the Arts for a year at, MacCormick Secure Center, a juvenile corrections facility in upstate New York. The first six weeks comprised a general music curriculum, going through rhythm, melody, harmony, and finally form. This curriculum was geared towards the students' musical interests in a way that allowed them to appreciate general music. I've been actively involved in music for over ten years and have a full understanding of all general music concepts.
I play guitar and bass guitar every day. I've taught many people their first steps on guitar, and I've helped other bass players improve their playing and learn advanced techniques, including different styles of slap bass, playing harmonics, and finger tapping. I'm a stickler for both the physical form of playing both instruments, as well as the widely accepted musical rudiments.
I'm a singer-songwriter myself. I approach songwriting from both the angle of poetry and that of music composition, as well as the ways the two aspects compliment and inform each other. I love writing songs, and I would love to work with students to help them write great songs to express themselves.
I have a B.A. in Writing from Ithaca College. During college I worked I the writing center, helping peers improve their papers. Since then I've helped students in a range of writing tasks, from creative writing, to research papers, to college admissions essays. I also have three years of experience in grant writing.
