I am enthusiastic about working with students - and professionals - to improve their writing, editing, and document production skills as well as their fluency with Microsoft Office and other computer software programs. I have substantial experience working with students of all ages on nearly all aspects of computer proficiency, from the basics to word processing software to Internet browsing to online academic research! I will work with you on any aspect of your writing, including (but not limited to) revising and editing; organization and clarity; grammar and spelling; thesis development; researching/incorporating sources; and creating and polishing professional documents such as job applications.

My experience includes 2.5 years as a college-level Writing Tutor, 1 year as a graduate-level Writing Tutor, over 5 years of general tutoring, and 4 years of professional experience with writing, editing, research, and collaboration. I have also taught two sections of a college-level orientation course focusing on academic skill development. I am highly proficient in Windows and Mac operating systems and in a variety of software, particularly Microsoft Office.

In 2011, I graduated with honors from Muhlenberg College with a BA in Sociology. In 2012, I earned my Master's in Sociology from Lehigh University.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Computer

I use a computer for personal and professional activities on a daily basis, and have used computers for educational purposes for over 15 years. I am qualified to help students of any age with basic computing using both Windows and Mac operating systems. I have helped peers and tutees to navigate the basic functions of a computer; use basic word processing software (such as Microsoft Word) and other software (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Publisher/Mac Pages); access and use the internet; manage files; and troubleshoot issues they are having with their personal computers or with learning to use a computer.

I have a great deal of experience in proofreading student and professional drafts, documents, and papers for grammar and spelling, as well as teaching students about grammatical rules and conventions. From 2009-2011, I was a peer writing tutor at Muhlenberg College, earning Level II CRLA certification and becoming a Lead Tutor from 2010-2011. After graduating from Muhlenberg, I have tutored a number of adult, college, and high school students in writing and computer skills, including helping them to identify and correct grammatical errors in their writing or proofreading their documents.

Microsoft Excel

In my current job, I use Excel daily to manage databases, organize records, and create descriptive reports. My undergraduate and graduate education in Sociology and social research made me very comfortable with using Excel and navigating its toolbar and features. I have used Excel in both educational and professional settings to enhance reports, organize data, and maintain records. I have worked with students through and outside of Wyzant on basic Excel functions, keyboard commands (such as VLOOKUP), and table/graph/chart creation and formatting.

Microsoft Word

I am highly proficient in Microsoft Word and its features. I have used Word to write articles and papers, review and revise others' work, create reports and publications, and manage documents for a variety of projects. I am familiar with most features of older and current versions of the software.

For my current job, I use Microsoft Word on a daily basis for reports, projects, and document management. I have helped tutees with document creation, management, and formatting; text formatting; tables and charts; picture insertion and formatting; and document editing and proofreading, to name a few.

After years of excelling at editing and revising in grammar school and in college, I am now the resident editor at my place of employment. I am well-versed in common grammar and syntax errors and an excellent speller. As a writing tutor with over 3 years of experience, I am well-versed at picking up errors in students' writing and working with them to identify repetitive errors and ways to improve the flow and polish of writing.

I have experience taking - and studying the content of - standardized exams including the PSAT, SAT, and GRE. I took the PSAT in 2006 and was a National Merit Commended Student. In addition to being familiar with the process involved with and content of the PSAT/SAT tests, I recently taught two sections of a college orientation course that focused on areas including the development of test-taking and study skills.

SAT Writing

I took the SAT Writing in 2007 and scored a 750. For my entire educational career, writing has been my strong suit. As a writing tutor, proofreader, and humanities/social sciences enthusiast, I have developed an ability to write analytically, clearly, and strongly.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 2011, graduating with Honors for successful defense of my undergraduate thesis focusing on social actors' construction of narratives of gendered experience and participation in gendered communities. After my undergraduate education, I graduated from Lehigh University's Community Fellows program with a Master of Arts in Sociology. My coursework has included quantitative and qualitative methods, research design, social theory, and the sociology of health/medicine, sex/gender, and race/ethnicity.

Study Skills

I recently taught two sections of a semester long college orientation course at the community college level. The course aims to introduce students (many of whom are new to - or reacclimating to - the college environment) to study skills and strategies for academic success in all courses. Topics I have covered with students include: critical reading/writing/thinking, organization, identifying and using educational resources, exam preparation, building an individual study plan, and strategies for groupwork/teamwork.

This is my strongest skill and the one I am most enthusiastic about working on with others! I have experience working with students on areas such as grammar/spelling; organization; thesis statement development; clarity; researching and incorporating sources; and refinement of resumes, cover letters, and personal statements.

My educational and professional experience with writing/writing tutoring includes: graduation from a writing-intensive liberal arts undergraduate curriculum; 2.5 years of experience as a Lead Tutor at the Muhlenberg College Writing Center, working with students on all aspects of their writing in all disciplines; a year of focused one-on-one writing tutoring with a Lehigh undergraduate student; the completion of an argument-driven, researched, and organized honors thesis; and professional experience producing written work for reports and publications.
