About Bruce

Hello. I am a semi-retired professional with a gift for explaining things so students understand them. It sounds simple, but so often I receive feedback such as "Now I understand; no one ever explained it to me that way".

I first establish a rapport with the student, using humor as much as possible. I let the student set the pace so that they feel in control. This creates in the student a sense of ownership and responsibility, which in turn engenders commitment and accountability. I participate in the learning experience with the student so we become a team. We focus on the positive and celebrate every success together. Importantly, we end each session on a high note (and, if possible, a cookie!).

I tutor reading, writing, math, and science (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) in all grades through high school. I am experienced in both one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction, with either children, teens, or adult learners (especially for GED, ESL, and computer basics). I also tutor the use of software, such as Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Outlook, and Project. I am happy to help with homework and study skills in general or with a focused task, such as studying for a test or writing a paper.

Learning is a lifelong process. My goal is that your student be successful, without stress but rather with enjoyment. My hope is that the student will look forward to the next tutoring session.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Microsoft Project

I love MS Project and have been using it for about 20 years. Most recently, I have used the enterprise version integrated into MS SharePoint. I have taken both MS Project training and non-technical Project Planning training. When used correctly, it can be a vital tool for PMs. Unfortunately, some commit the cardinal sin of hard-coding dates instead of using task dependencies, which defeats the purpose of MS Project's powerful features.

I have enjoyed training junior PMs to use Project as one tool within the overall project management process - they should be taught together.

Study Skills

I believe in the importance of learning good study habits as early as possible, because they will serve you well throughout your life. I have been a project manager for 20 years, and I think of studying as a project - a good plan gives you the best chance for success. This method answers the questions: what is due when? How long will each assignment take? What is needed to complete the work (library books, art supplies, etc.)? Then block out enough time on the calendar to get everything done, considering other demands, such as sports, music lessons, etc. The student is often very surprised at how far ahead of time tasks must start - which they would not have realized without this process. By having such a schedule, they feel in control and confident. They complete tasks with less anxiety and a greater sense of accomplishment.

Writing

I have worked with students on grammar, which is so important for writing to be clear and understood. I work on structure - topic sentences, an intro and a conclusion. I am a big proponent of outlines - if you start with a good outline, you're guaranteed at least a B.
