Math frequently feels like a struggle for many people so it is my goal when I teach to connect ideas with things that everyone knows. For example, fractions are especially difficult for many people but thinking about them as money helps a lot. If I say, "what's 1/2 + 3/4?" that can take a little bit of time to think about, but if I say, "How much money is 50 cents plus 3 quarters?", then you know immediately it is $1.25. Connecting ideas to things we already know is how we learn in general so it should be how we learn math as well.
I love tutoring because I love working with others and helping others. Seeing ideas make sense or individuals gaining confidence is all the encouragement I need to keep doing it. I want people to be able to use math to help them in their daily lives or at least see that math is all around us.
As per my qualifications, I went to a high school called the Academy of Mathematics, Science and Engineering in Rockaway, New Jersey, received my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York and am currently a Ph.D graduate student in Mathematics at LSU. Although this will only be my second year in Louisiana, I've already been leading classes in Business Calculus (over 8 separate classes this year alone!) and holding regular weekly office hours (as one of my students attests with enthusiasm, "This guy brought my grade up from failing to a B+ !".) In addition to this, I received a 33 on the ACT, a 2160 on the SATs, a perfect score on the SAT2 Mathematics Subject test, and was in the top 5% for all sections of the graduate school exam commonly known as the GRE.
Don't let all of this experience be intimidating, however. In my everyday, I'm very down to earth and love longboarding, fencing (the sport), yoga, hiking and camping. I'd be excited to help out with anything you need!
As stated above, I've done very well in all of these subjects, but most importantly I want to present these ideas in ways that make sense and so that you can remember them for the test / quiz / homework that comes up. Math is a hard subject to learn on your own so having someone there who knows the pitfalls and traps while explaining the general ideas is invaluable.
Despite all I've written up here, the most important part of this whole process is you, the student. Despite my often laidback attitude, I care very deeply about my students and will often extend my weekly office hours past their scheduled time for those students still working and needing help. I can't wait to be of service.
