Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I earned an Orton-Gillingham Certification from the Institute of Multi-Sensory Education, which is the leading reading program developed specifically for students with dyslexia. I tutored my own daughter, who was a struggling reader, twice a week for six months and she went from an oral reading fluency score of 12 words per minute to a score of 50 words per minute. I taught kindergarten intervention at Alpine Elementary School, where I instructed small groups of children with reading difficulties, including dyslexia, for extra help. I implemented Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory lessons with these students and within 8 weeks, every student showed significant growth. For example, one child started out identifying only 4 letters/sounds and by the end of just 8 weeks, he was able to identify 16 letters/sounds correctly, as well as spell and decode words that contained these 16 letters! I have 14 years of experience privately tutoring students, with a variety of reading difficulties, from kindergarten-3rd grade. In addition to the Orton-Gillingham certification, I also hold a Master's of Arts in teaching from the University of Pittsburgh, and I am the founder of Play Together, Read Together.
