About Sandra

Success involves practical application of self-education. The right "fit" for educating a student
is really a combination of student motivation and teacher stimulation.

You can make teaching fun and interesting. It separates those who become life-long learners and those who learn by "rote". I have been teaching for over 15 years in different capacities. My college experience in teaching at Sussex County College, Newton, NJ, showed me how 90% of successful learning is based on attitude and student motivation. Stimulation seems to be a "given" with most college students; they want to be there.

Attitude is essential whether you are teaching in elementary grades or college courses. Scientifically, there are many studies done, which show a control group and a random group of students who are told they are the "best and brightest" in their class. Students from both groups are given I.Q. Tests (Subject tests, personality tests, etc.) and 99% of the time, the group labeled "brightest" scored the
highest (even though they were ALL picked at random). Most students of all levels succeeded their expectations and those of their teachers/professors.

I have my NJ Teaching License, and have been teaching for over 20 years. My credentials include Professor at Sussex County Community College, and Math Teacher for Hamburg Public Schools. I tutored Algebra and Middle School Math, and am currently a Substitute for Sparta Middle School and High School for the past 14 years.

In conclusion, I am a strong proponent of treating emotional intelligence and intellectual intelligence to create the perfect environment.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I tutored High School students in Algebra II.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently hold a NJ Elementary Ed. license for grades K through 8th. I have been teaching for over 20 years in all subjects.

Study Skills

I have taught in Middle School for over 10 years, (Sparta NJ Twnshp) Over the years study skills have been one of my specific interests. I have worked extensively with Special Education Students/Resource Classes on how to more effectively study and take notes for their individual subjects. I have found that instruction with Note-Taking and Organizing an Outline is
an art that isn't taught in Public Education to my liking. There is a definite correlation with note-taking (index cards, outlines, and audio devices) and successful grades. My success has been in instruction of Creating an Outline for each subject and how to prioritize the important bullets/points.

I also taught Basic Skills at a local Community College (Sussex Community College, Newton NJ) several years ago and the course entailed "Whether you were a Visual Learner or Audio Learner?" Each student was given instruction and a rubric to find what type of Learner they were. The results were amazing as each student gained such insight in reaching his/her potential.

Study Skills is so foundational that I would make it a requirement in all middle or high schools. Most of my tutoring starts with creating a study guide in outline form as to the
objective of the course, what you are trying to achieve, how you are going to achieve it and the strategy to succeed.

I think it is part of the reason for my success.

Knowledgable, helpful, and encouraging

My 13 y.o. son left his tutoring session with a much better understanding of the underlying concepts he had been struggling with. He was able to go through his past exams and figure out where he went wrong and then was able to immediately apply what Sandra taught him to that evening's homework, saving himself from making an error using one of her techniques. So far, he's happy, I am happy.
