About Ria

What I love about drawing is that it does not require knowledge that is specific to any single culture. Images and art making in general are important for that reason, along with many others. I find that the satisfaction and pride that comes with creating the imagery that you want is a rewarding experience unlike any other. Drawing requires no fancy equipment, simply a sharp pencil and some paper. It is an experience open to all.

I majored in Studio Art at Drew University, where I concentrated my study in oil painting. In college, I developed a foundation of translating what the eye interprets into an image that can be shared with others. I spent much of my time in discussion and critique, which are key in teaching and developing more successful ways of rendering images to a given person's vision.

When I was a student, my favorite teachers were passionate about their subject matter. My interest and respect for drawing is what makes me passionate, and what makes me a good teacher. I look forward to passing down the experiences and knowledge that have been given to me by my own teachers, professors, and peers.

I currently work as a one-to-one aide in an autistic classroom. Because many of my students are non-verbal, visual representation is an essential form of communication. I find that the language of pictures is beneficial to all. I am currently pursing certification to be an art teacher in the state of New Jersey.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

My experience as a one-to-one aide in an autistic classroom has given me an insight into the autistic mind. Because so many of my students are non-verbal, communication through visual representation is all the more significant. It is my belief that an understanding of the basic elements of drawing is a powerful tool for any person, but even more so for individuals on the spectrum.

Drawing

I have been drawing as far back as I can remember. It was when I took my first life drawing class that I realized how rewarding basic drawing instruction can be for someone who is interested in developing skill as a draftsman - regardless of age or occupation. Both during and after graduating from college, I have worked on methods and techniques to create a given image. I believe that the fundamentals of drawing are key in the art making process, regardless of medium.

I love painting, whether it is a quick gestural sketch, or a long-term piece with many layers. Most of my work is done on canvas with oil paint, which became my favorite medium, but I have used acrylics, tempura, and watercolors as well.
