A Taft School and Wight Foundation Alum born in Newark, NJ, I graduated from Tufts University as a Clinical Psychology Major and Religion Minor. In the Fall of 2016, I will begin a Doctoral program in Clinical Psychology at the Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP). During vacations and even throughout the school year, I have enjoyed working with young people as a homework helper, mentor, and tutor. As someone who has been given much, both in opportunity and resources, I am passionate about giving back and helping people in the best ways that I can. In the past, I provided homework help for middle school students at the Boys and Girls Club, I have tutored a high school student with Cerebral Palsy and ADD-like symptoms in various subjects, including English and Precalculus, and I have taught SAT Math and SAT Reading through a free SAT and Self-Empowerment Program (SSEP) that I co-facilitated for Newark High school students. Apart from academics, I also interned with the Newark Chess Club where I taught chess and its related life lessons.
My tutoring style varies depending on the student I am working with. I recognize that people learn and understand things differently, and so I do my best to present information in different ways to better learn which methods work best with my student. Another approach I take is to work with what my student does know and to build from there. This way, the tutoring time can be more fruitful and efficient. With regards to math problems, I have seen from experience that both repetition and diversity of problems help to build a student's confidence and to solidify their competence. As a result, I frequently create math problems that are both similar to and different from the ones that my students are assigned so that they have more practice opportunity. With regards to reading, I work hard to create excitement about the subject by challenging my student to connect the reading to things they already know or enjoy. That way, they are better able to conceptualize and retain the information. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have assisted elementary and middle school aged students in math through the Boys & Girls Club as well as various summer school programs. While tutoring, I strive to relate problems to the student's interests so that the work seems more relevant. I also come prepared with practice problems relating to what the student is working on in school, so that they can demonstrate their comprehension of problem steps.
I excelled in Geometry in high school. I especially enjoyed solving various proof problems that challenged me to understand the concepts and apply them in a backwards manner. In the event that a student is struggling in the area of proofs (if they still do them nowadays), I will be great at providing encouragement and direction for solving these problems. When teaching this subject, I look to see where the student is with regards to their competence in the subject. Thus, I help them to build on what they know by gradually increasing problem difficulty while both explaining the concepts in everyday language and relating them to everyday problems the student may face.
