About Jenn

I am an elementary education teacher with two full years of experience in 3rd grade. I am currently pursuing my Master's in Reading Specialization. During my 2 years of teaching, I have been nominated for Teacher of the Year and featured in "Think Teachers" magazine as "Teacher of the Month" in March 2013. I also ran a Literacy Night for parents of students in grades 3-5 to foster a love of literacy at home and strengthen school to home relationships. I have experience with Wilson Reading Systems (a multisensory approach to teaching reading) and Phonics First, a nationally accredited method to teaching reading that is based off of the Orton Gillingham approach. To continue my knowledge in the education field, I am affiliated with the International Literacy Association and the National Council of Teachers of English to keep up with the research and best practice methods in the literacy field. I also participate in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to study the research and best practices in the field of mathematics.

My strengths are teaching math, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. I also specialize in middle school reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. I have used the Wilson Reading Systems to tutor a student for an hour in the mornings before school started. It made a difference in her oral expression, reading, writing, vocabulary, and social confidence. I also tutored a student after school to improve her test scores and avoid attending summer school. In my current Masters class, I am tutoring a student (Clinical work) based on the student's scores on the standardized tests I administered (i.e. - Woodcock Johnson, Detroit) and the Informal Reading Inventory, which is not standardized. The assessments provided insight into the skills and areas that needed to be strengthened. I facilitate activities are not worksheet based but hands on and tactile. This involves the learner and allows connections so that the learning "sticks". I like to serve as a facilitator of learning so that the student is scaffolded and in charge of his/her learning.

I attended Montclair State University for their accredited and excellent education program that exposed me to a variety of classroom ideas and experience. Through Montclair State University, I spent one summer semester with a cohort of students in the Urban Teaching Academy (at Montclair State University). Through the academy, we worked in urban communities spending our time feeding the homeless at soup kitchens, cleaning various community service buildings, and working with children at a Boys & Girls Club. I student taught 5th grade in an urban school district, and my cooperating teacher nominated me to the Montclair State University Outstanding Student Teacher Award after previously receiving the Teacher's Club of Montclair award. I graduated Montclair State University with Magna Cum Laude honors, then served as a substitute teacher in a variety of districts and grades to obtain further educational experience before I landed a job teaching 3rd grade in an urban district.

As a teacher, I understand that each child has a unique way of learning. That is why I remind myself of Carl Jung's words, "If there is anything that we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could better be changed in ourselves." I hold myself to teaching what a student needs and in the way that the student needs it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I teach 3rd grade in an urban district in a self-contained classroom, so I have experience with reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. I have tutored students in Wilson Language Systems and after school intervention/extension. I keep up with professional developments in each subject to teach at the level of rigor and the methods that are current to improving the education in each subject. I am also pursuing my Master's in Reading Specialization.

Grammar

I have an eye for grammar after following an intense grammar curriculum in my elementary, middle school, and high school years. From the rigorous curriculum, I took the skills and rules I had learned and transferred that to my writing abilities. I now help impart grammar conventions and writing techniques with my students in their writing pieces. I find that studying mentor texts and authors makes for more transference when asking students to do what is considered correct in the English language. Books and authors are the best teachers of conventions, and ultimately, that is what students are - authors using the same conventions as other authors to make a great experience for the reader.

Phonics

I have experience in Wilson Language Systems and have used my knowledge to tutor students using the Wilson system. I also have experience in Phonics First, a similar program to Orton-Gillingham. I am currently pursuing my Master's in Reading Specialization to contribute to the field of teaching and growing readers and learners.

Reading

I have taught literacy in the 3rd grade classroom for two years, and I am qualified to teach Literacy in grades 5-8. I enjoy teaching reader's and writer's workshop and conferring with students about their progress - comprehension, accuracy, and fluency. I have experience in Wilson Language Systems and Phonics First, two multisensory phonics programs that are similar to the Orton Gillingham approach. I am pursuing my Masters in Reading Specialization, and I am currently enrolled in a course that requires me to work one-on-one with a student based on deficiencies in skills identified after administering a series of standardized tests. I have tutored students in the morning before school begins in the Wilson techniques to improve reading skills, and I have worked with students after school to raise test schools to avoid summer school.

Writing

I have a Masters of Arts in Literacy Specialization (both reading and writing). I model writing with my students by using my own writing notebook. I teach Language Arts.
