I am a Yale-trained Ph.D. with over 10 years of experience teaching and doing interdisciplinary science research.
Yes, I actually have publications involving most of the subjects I tutor in.
I am fond of using analogies to make students comfortable with unfamiliar subjects, and I make every effort to get my students to truly understand the subject they are studying. I encourage questions, and if you don't bring your own questions, I will ask you questions to test your proficiency.
“Mike's depth of knowledge and ability to explain complex matters in rather simple terms are impressive.” I am a Yale-trained Ph.D. with over 10 years of experience teaching and doing interdisciplinary science research.

Michael tutored both my twin sons for most of the last school year. He tutored them on 10th grade Math and Chemistry Honors. Michael is very knowledgeable and took the time to understand and address their gaps and questions - he definitively helped them improve their grades. The boys liked him and he was always willing to work around our schedules. Even though he lives far away, he was always on time and very flexible when it came to last minute requests to help with exam crunch time and other situations. We plan on working with Michael next year as well
Mike teaches my son on AP chemistry. Through his strong knowledge and teaching experience, my son has made a lot of progress and gained more confidence in weeks.
Mike was terrific for our high schooler who needed to reinforce his classroom lessons in calculus. Mike was easy to work with and really tried to accommodate scheduling changes whenever possible.
I was very fortunate to have Michael as a tutor. He thoroughly knows Chemistry, able to answer any questions that i had asked him, and explain it in a different way if I did not understand the first time around. I had much trouble with AP level Organic Chemistry, but he was able to explain it to me within an hour. Overall Micheal, is patient, and learned in his subject!
With three tutoring sessions under my belt thus far, I've already seen immense improvement in my Calculus 3 scores and abilities. Michael makes things very easy to understand. He has a very solid grasp on mathematics. It allows him to explain the material in more than one way, just in case you don't get it the first time. His practical experience lends itself well to people who learn by understanding the "why" as well as the "how." I am incredibly pleased with his patience, efficiency, and genuine interest in making sure I understand the material and am capable of doing it the RIGHT way, not just the easy way. As an added bonus, he responds to my e-mails very quickly!
A+ Michael! Thank you :-)
With little refreshing necessary, I was able to show Mike the problems I was having trouble with and he explained useful techniques to solve them. I did much better on my exam after the tutoring session and will definitely be a repeat customer.
My experience with Michael was excellent. Michael assisted me with a graduate statistics assignment. Michael throughly explained the problems to me. Too, he was extremely patient, nice and friendly. With Michael's help, I earned an A for the assignment.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a PhD Computational Scientist with considerable experience in writing custom scientific software. Over the course of my career thus far, I estimate that I have written approximately 20,000 lines of C code, including two large data analysis packages. I have experience training graduate students in C programming, and can certainly help anybody learning C at the beginning to intermediate level.
I have considerable experience in a wide range of computer programming activities, ranging from web programming to sophisticated scientific number crunching. I have a firm grasp of the concepts and applications of different computer programming paradigms (procedural, functional, event-based, object oriented, etc.) and can communicate those concepts to students.
My 10+ years in computational science research has given me substantial practical experience in computer science topics, including algorithm design and analysis, computational complexity, algorithms for graph theory and other discrete math problems, and numerical algorithms for algebra, statistics and calculus. My practical experience allows me to not only present the theoretical aspects of computer science, but connect it to applications in practical computer programming.
I have real-world practical experience with several disciplines that fall under the rubric of "discrete math", including graph theory, information theory, operations research, and combinatorics. Not only have I applied these methods to research problems, I also have experience explaining these concepts to both students and supervisors.
In addition to my coursework in general and advanced eukaryotic genetics as a graduate student, my work as a research professor involved a significant amount of genetics, especially population genetics (one of the sub-disciplines of genetics that many students find particularly mysterious and confusing). In my experience, learning genetics is fundamentally about learning the terminology and a few simple concepts, and then learning to apply these concepts to a variety of situations. I can bring my real-world scientific experience and ability to explain concepts and their application in terms of examples and analogies to help anybody struggling with genetics.
In my 15 years of experience in scientific research as a graduate student and research professor, I have made extensive use of linear algebra in my own research work and have to helped train others in the use of linear algebra for their research. Thus, I can not only explain linear algebra to students, but also provide examples of how it is used in real-life applications.
I have been a user of Mathematica in the context of scientific research since the early 1990s, and have a very strong understanding of the fundamentals of the software and how to use it to solve mathematical and data analysis problems. I can help anybody who is struggling with the learning curve of this powerful but sometimes confusing behemoth of a computer program.
