About Brooke

Teaching, like learning, does not end when the bell rings. It is the extra time we put into it outside of the classroom that makes all the difference. As a high school English teacher (three years subbing and three years full time), I know how difficult it can be for students to receive the one-on-one attention they need to become stronger writers. My love for writing is almost as strong as my love for teaching it, and I take pride in passing along the skills I have found useful in my own endeavors.

At Stockton University, I double-majored in Psychology and Literature and completed the Education Program for English. I also took classes for an ELL endorsement and passed the Praxis exam for Theatre Arts.

I have taught World, American, and British literature courses on the high school level and will be teaching a grammar course next year. I have also tutored college freshmen struggling with writing structure and ELL students eagerly learning the nuances of the English language. I developed graphic organizers that have proven to allow students to finally see how their writing should be structured in order to succeed in high school, college, career, and life.

I have served as director, assistant director, and choreographer at a popular local summer camp over the course of 16 years. I direct the musical at the high school where I teach and have done so for five years, and have directed the one act play for three years. Performing has made me a more confident person who works well as a part of a team, so I love passing those lessons on to others who have found an interest in acting. I am happy to offer guidance in stage presence, voice quality, blocking, character, and motivation. Please note that I do not have a degree in Theatre and should not be contacted for advice on establishing Theatre as a profession.

I love teaching. There is no greater feeling than working with a student and seeing them truly understand a concept for the first time. Please send me a message so we can work together to help you on your journey.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Praxis

I have completed and passed the Praxis exams for Literature and for Theatre. In preparation for these exams I did not purchase study materials, but rather created my own study guides based on material lists provided by ETS. I then researched the terms and prepared a study guide of my own. I have shared these guides with others who have used them to successfully study for the exam. I can also offer advice on study methods (I am a high school English teacher), preparation on the day of the test, and test taking strategies for students with test anxiety.

Theatre

I have served as director, assistant director, and choreographer at a popular local summer camp over the course of 16 years. I direct the musical (five years) and one act play (three years) at the high school where I teach English (three years) and Theatre Arts (two years). I passed the Praxis exam for Theatre Arts and have been involved with many theatrical productions both on and off the stage.
