Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am a seventh grade English Language Arts teacher in New Jersey. Besides my normal teaching duties, I have ten years of experience tutoring both in-school curriculum, as well as one-on-one private, and special needs education. I have experience teaching American Standard English and ESL as well as teaching foreign students. I possess excellent communication skills, and I have tutored in all subject areas.

Handwriting

As a Language Arts teacher, much of my focus is on my students' penmanship and handwriting skills. I find that my school year students and my summer school students lack in these areas. The reason is that penmanship and handwriting skills are no longer part of the curriculum and are not taught to any extent in most schools today.

I believe proper handwriting skills are still necessary even in today's technology-driven society. Many of my students' essays are difficult to grade simply because I can hardly read them. This has a negative effect on their grades, and if they do not improve, they will encounter communication difficulties later on in life.

Study Skills

There is a range of study skills I employ which are commensurate with each student's abilities. These include the use of index and/or flash cards, repetition, outlining, and reviewing to mention only some. These study skills as well as other methods are particularly important when tutoring ESL and special needs students.
