In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach in K-6 subjects areas due to my extensive experience as a classroom teacher and substitute teacher. I have substituted in grades PK-12. I have taught these elementary subjects many times. I am even published in a teaching magazine, The Mailbox, for my creative classroom strategies.
As an elementary teacher for many years, I have taught many students the basic writing skills they need. I have taught from how to hold your pencil to writing names to constructing whole paragraphs. I am very patient and understand that hand writing is difficult for many but I am willing to work with students on this very important skill.
As a teacher of early childhood, I have taught the foundations of reading, which I consider to be phonics, to many students. I believe a strong foundation in phonics and phonological awareness in important in the success of young readers and reading comprehension. I say reading comprehension because if a child is struggling to read they are more focused on decoding words and not comprehension. Therefore, success in phonics and phonological awareness are key!
I am just finishing the year as a Catholic school teacher at Saint John Paul II Regional School in Stratford, NJ. During my time there I taught Catholicism to my students. I am a practicing Catholic and was in Catholic school Kindergarten to 12th grade.
