New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey (Graduate Coursework)
My background is in Engineering and related fields including Mathematics and other applicable topics such as Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, SAT Math, Trigonometry, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Physics, and Earth Sciences. I am currently employed as a full-time Teacher of Mathematics at a regional High School in northern Monmouth County, New Jersey. I am a Certified Teacher of Mathematics and a Certified Teacher of Physics, meeting the criteria as a Highly Qualified Teacher in both subject areas. I am very familiar with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards that many school districts have been implementing, and this certainly allows me to be an informed, effective, and highly competent tutor. My classroom strategies and instructional practices are easily adapted to private, one-on-one tutoring, and I have a vast collection of useful and diverse teaching resources. I am looking forward to a long and rewarding career in teaching, both in the classroom and as a personal, private tutor.
Tutoring is a wonderful experience that is very gratifying because it is a chance to work individually with a student to develop their intellectual independence based on their particular learning style. It is a chance to establish trust and to supply the student with specific habits and skills that will ease the student's ability to adapt to challenges of particular subjects or the teaching style of a given classroom teacher. One of the most interesting and rewarding aspects of tutoring is test preparation. All of my students have done extremely well on their class tests, entrance tests, and other standardized tests after working with me. I offer valuable insight and guidance to my students who may have test taking anxiety, as well as strategies and methods to recall key concepts and reinforce understanding.
I enjoy the challenges and applications of Math and Science to everyday situations and incorporating these into lessons. I also have coached many kids successfully in recreation program sports such as baseball, tee ball, basketball, and soccer. I have a New Jersey Youth Soccer Association "F" license, and I have been a Head Coach of a girls travel soccer team for a soccer club. I also have been the Head Coach of a Girls Softball team in my borough. It is very rewarding for me to work with kids and they always seem to respond positively to my methods and motivational techniques. My tutoring methods are based on determining and assessing the source of a student's needs and focusing on positive reinforcement. Solutions to problems and analysis of topics are mastered by applying logic, step by step processing, and introducing strategies that can assist quickly when used repetitively. I believe in developing a deeper understanding of the topic through comparisons and applications, and presenting the lesson in an interesting way so the student is involved and motivated.
I prefer to have students understand the material thoroughly and not simply memorize. Repetition and understanding the means to the end are always essential keys to successful results. These principles are applied to coaching and instructing kids in sports as well. I would greatly welcome the opportunity to work with your child to assist them in reaching their potential and being a positive role model. I am also a parent and I can assure you I will treat your child with care and respect, be courteous and attentive to them, and instill them with confidence and strategies for success. If you are a college student, or an adult taking college courses, I believe my life and professional experience and academic background would be assets to assist you in your scholastic endeavors. I truly enjoy teaching, coaching, mentoring, and sharing knowledge and methods for analyzing and decoding problems.
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge". This is one of my favorite quotes about teaching made by the learned Mr. Albert Einstein, and summarizes my belief and philosophy about the excitement of teaching and learning. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to the opportunity to help you with your academic endeavors. A quote directly from my 16 year-old son who has gone from a low C student to a 97 average (math) student at CBA with John's guidance and support. My Son says John D cares more than anyone he has ever met. That is quite a statement coming from a teenager.
I cannot give enough praise for John; what he has done to help my Son is immeasurable and priceless. My Son barely passed math during his freshman and sophomore years. This year, he has a 97 average to date. John works with him before tests. As you can see, the results speak for themselves.
Thank you, John.
John is an excellent tutor. My daughter was able to catch up on her math subject and thoroughly understand it. Great tutor!!
John has been tutoring my daughter for the ACT, mostly around math. She has had two other tutors for math so far but she finds John extremely easy to work with and understand. He really helps her through the problems, and she feels extremely comfortable with John. He is accommodating to her schedule, and she looks forward to her sessions with John.
My daughter was having a hard time in geometry, but with John's help she was able to start getting 90's on her exams. She was very proud of herself because she thought she was a lost cause when it came to geometry. We were both very happy with John. We would absolutely recommend him.
My daughter and me we were very happy to have John as a tutor. He did excellent job preparing my daughter for her SAT and ACT tests. Thank you very much!
John has helped my son greatly by tutoring him for his Honors Geometry class. John is very reliable and flexible in scheduling the tutoring sessions. He is very dedicated to helping students understand the material and to be able to complete their assignments in a timely manner. John's tutoring has enabled my son to be much more confident in his approach to his Honors Geometry class and has improved his grades consistently in his quizzes and tests. Thank you John!
John has done a excellent job preparing my son for his upcoming high school entrance exam. Each week he comes equipped with the materials such as study guides, work sheets and old exams that has helped to challenge my son into remembering, learning and familiarzing himself with both the material on and the taking of the test itself. He worked with us to make the scheduling very convenient. I would highly recommand John as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My credentials include being a highly qualified Certified Teacher of Mathematics, K-12. I am a very frequent guest teacher in Middle School, teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry.
I have studied and reviewed many sample SAT exams, and I have developed pertinent and essential strategies for navigating the test quickly and confidently. I am a highly qualified Certified Teacher of Mathematics, and my 25 years of experience in Civil Engineering professional services gives me a great volume of resources that I am able to make available to my students. In addition to my Mathematics background, I possess Language Arts teaching skills that I have acquired through teaching in the classroom, writing technical reports and summaries, and having studied Latin for many years. Latin is very helpful in determining the roots and meanings of vocabulary words, which is a vital strategy when preparing for the SAT.
I have had great success working with students in SAT Reading/Writing preparation. I am an avid reader and writer, and have always studied vocabulary, roots of words, standard English and grammar, structure, and usage. My experiences as an occasional teacher and qualifications as a Certified Teacher are great assets to help student improve reading comprehension skills, and expand their vocabulary word bank. I review the Latin and Greek roots of many words with my students. This has proven to be a proven, effective strategy to help my students perform at a high level on the test.
