Approved subjects
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Elementary (K-6th)
I was an elementary school teacher for 17 years. During that time I planned and implemented lessons in all elementary subjects (reading, writing, spelling, phonics, math, science, social studies, study skills, character education, Spanish) at several grade levels. I am NJ certified in elementary education and have a BA degree in Psychology & Education from Vassar College as well as a MA in Administration & Supervision from Montclair State University. In addition to teaching in the classroom I also tutored students in these subjects after school and in the summers over the past 15 years.
Phonics
I have planned and implemented many phonics lessons through whole-group lessons, mini-leasons, Big Books and guided reading groups) at several grade levels. I also tutored students in reading after school and in the summers over the past 15 years. I am familiar with Fountas and Pinnell and the DRA as an assessment tool.
