In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with elementary level students to improve their phonemic awareness and decoding skills using the Open Court Phonics Program as well Foundations. I have also tutored students to bring their reading skills up to grade level.
I completed ASL (American Sign Language) I through ASL V at Camden County College along with Deaf Culture and American Sign Language Linguistics. I also was a teacher for the Diocese of Camden Ministry with the Deaf for 5 years.
While at Johns Hopkins as an undergraduate I worked as a Study Consultant for the Office of Academic Advising. I helped students develop organizational, time management and study skills. Some methods that I encourage include SQ3R, Concept Mappings, creating study guides and using mnemonics.
