Laurie has been working with my wife and I to continue learning ASL and it has been a great experience. We had previously had several months of ASL classes, but the schedule no longer worked for us. Laurie was able to pick right up where our classes left off. She has worked with us to customize the lessons to build on what we already learned without starting over. Its obvious that she prepares ahead of time for each lesson, as she comes with a lesson plan and worksheets for each day. We look forward to continuing ASL lessons with her and have already recommended her to other family members.
My 11 year old started ASL in camp and wanted to continue but she is too young for an organized class. Laurie was able to pick up where camp left off. My daughter is so happy which means so am I!!!
My daughter is taking sign language lessons with Laurie and it has been great. My daughter has learned so much in six weeks and we are very impressed by Laurie's organization and thoughtfulness. Laurie is always on time and is very easy to work with. We would recommend her as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with elementary level students to improve their phonemic awareness and decoding skills using the Open Court Phonics Program as well Foundations. I have also tutored students to bring their reading skills up to grade level.
I completed ASL (American Sign Language) I through ASL V at Camden County College along with Deaf Culture and American Sign Language Linguistics. I also was a teacher for the Diocese of Camden Ministry with the Deaf for 5 years.
While at Johns Hopkins as an undergraduate I worked as a Study Consultant for the Office of Academic Advising. I helped students develop organizational, time management and study skills. Some methods that I encourage include SQ3R, Concept Mappings, creating study guides and using mnemonics.
