Greetings, students and parents! My name is Marielle and I am from the Tri-State area. If you're reading my profile, we already have something in common: a drive and interest in learning. I am new to tutoring with Wyzant, but I have always been driven by my fondness for learning and helping others. In college, I minored in education and spent my final semesters as a teacher's aide in an elementary school (I worked within a specific 3rd grade classroom). Following my Bachelor's degree, I went on to graduate school, and graduated from my Master's program with a high distinction. My 176-page graduate thesis earned the highest grade in my class due to the quality of my writing skills and my creative and innovative approach. Thus, my strongest attributes include an adeptness at reading, research, writing and structuring essays, grammar, proofreading and editing, and teaching effective communication skills. I also have experience leading seminar discussions and assembling presentations to accompany public speaking engagements. If you recognize any of my strong points to be your weaknesses, it would be my pleasure to help you.
One of my tutoring goals is to quickly transform you - or your child - into the stand-out student that I became after years of continued education. With that said, I believe that it's important for a tutor to be more than just intelligent. If a student does not feel interested and comfortable with their tutor, they will be less likely to succeed. Having spent 13 months living, traveling, and studying abroad in Europe, I have a well-rounded view of the world, making it possible for me to offer you or your child a unique perspective on the subject matter at hand. In addition, I have a warm, friendly, and outgoing personality to make both younger and older students feel at ease.
My hope is not only to teach new study skills, but to keep you or your child challenged and engaged. I believe that a tutoring session should not be a chore to students, but rather, something that they find themselves looking forward to. This way, they will ultimately get the most from our time together. Furthermore, since it is personally rewarding for me to help others succeed, our relationship as tutor and student will be mutually beneficial. A win-win situation for everyone involved! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My Bachelor's and Master's degrees were in Art History and Modern and Contemporary Art, respectively. In order to complete these degrees, a large amount of architectural curriculum was required. I have studied and completed courses in ancient Roman and Greek architecture, Indian architecture, early Renaissance architecture, Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and 19th and 20th-century architecture in Europe and North America. These intensive classes provided a solid foundation of knowledge about different schools and classes of architecture, and chronologically explored different schools and styles including - but not limited to - the Baroque, Art Nouveau, Beaux Arts, Post-Modernism, Bauhaus, and Neoclassicism.
My background in architectural studies also encompassed seminars on American Decorative Arts and the development and transformation of furniture styles.
Architecture is one of my favorite subjects, and I am particularly passionate about it. I hope to transfer this passion to students who may be struggling with this subject.
As an undergraduate, I minored in early childhood and elementary education. This was an intense curriculum which included student teaching at an elementary school for a few hours per week. My course described this post as "hands on field experience" that provided me with invaluable and practical exposure in primary education. As a student teacher in a 3rd grade classroom, I was able to help students in every subject at the elementary level, including math, reading, writing, and science. I taught these lessons to individual elementary students, as well as those in groups! I also helped these students manage their lessons and study time. After the successful completion of my student teaching job (with high grades), I satisfactorily fulfilled the requirements for my minor!
In the past, I have helped classmates study for tests and organize study groups. My background also includes leading joint seminar discussions on discovering successful methods to result in higher grades. I am familiar with multiple methods of study skills; these include tips for effective note taking, mnemonics (for better retention of information), and efficient time management. SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review) is another method that has shown promise in improving memory retention, and has thus resulted in the improvement of scores for students who use it. It is important to keep in mind that different methods work better for different people. Learning the right study skills is very personal, and takes a lot of individualized time and attention - but I am willing to sit down with students and discover what method ultimately works best for each person!
