In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken and passed the PRAXIS I, which is the basic certification for teaching. I have a law degree and I have substitute taught in elementary and middle schools before.
I am extremely familiar with a variety of reading strategies. I am also good at explaining math and math related concepts in a myriad of ways until a student fully understands. And finally, I am able to assist in honing critical study skills and writing skills so that students will be more successful academically.
I have recently taken the Praxis and am waiting on my final scores (2/2/12). However, since I took the test via computer, I know my results for the Reading and Math sections of Praxis I. I scored a 185 in Reading and 189 in Math. The Praxis I scores range from 150-190. I am still waiting on my scores from the writing section.
I took Spanish in 8th grade and continued through senior year in high school when I took and passed the Spanish AP exam, allowing me to test out of the introductory Spanish classes in college. I completed a Spanish minor while at Duke University, and I spent a semester in Madrid, Spain during the fall of my senior year in college.
