Reading, Writing, Comp101, Literature, English, LAL, ELA--- there are tons of words and acronyms that describe what I teach. Let's keep things simple. I am a Reading and Writing instructor. One area is not separate from the other.
I have my BA in English from the College of St. Elizabeth. I earned a 4.0 GPA in my English major and a 3.84 cumulative GPA. I also have a Master's degree in Reading from Montclair State University. I earned a 4.0 GPA in that Master's program.
In terms of teaching experience,I have taught grades 6-8 for the past 11 years. I have tons of experience with the expectations of the NJASK. Additionally, I have worked with high schoolers as part of my graduate degree program. I also have worked with college level students at a local learning center.
When I tutor, I try to have fun with students. I try to vary my lessons too so that different strategies are taught and reinforced. Lastly, everyone has some strength connected to reading and/or writing. Let's work together to find your strengths and improve areas in which you struggle. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
They're vs. their vs. there, it's vs. it's, aisle vs. isle---English grammar is extremely complex.
However, English does follow patterns and rules; learning those patterns and rules can aid you in becoming a better writer.
I can help you learn these rules and make sense of those complex patterns.
Adverbs, pronoun & antecedent agreement, active voice vs. passive voice---together, we can make sense of it all and improve your writing skills.
I have worked with middle school students for the past 10 years. While the course I teach is not specifically titled "Study Skills," study skills are definitely embedded into my classroom. If you need help with study skills, i can help you with note taking, reading strategies, memory devices, and even general organization of class binders & notebooks. Once you unlock some study skills that work for you, academics will become more manageable.
Since English is a conglomeration of many other languages, it can be very confusing and complex. English vocabulary can also be fascinating and fun. Let's work together and make sense of this complexity. Together, we can unlock your vocabulary skills. I can help you embed more advanced vocabulary into your writing and speaking.
There are many genres of writing: explanatory writing, expository writing, memoirs, lab report writing, poetry, persuasive writing, and plenty more. Let's work together and explore the differences between those writing genres. Once you understand the differences between those genres, you can become a stronger writer.
