I have an M.A. in Journalism from New York University and a B.A. in English and writing from University of Virginia, where I was an Echols Scholar. I am a writer and editor with more than 30 years' experience in university, church, technical, and commercial magazine settings. My teaching experience includes GED as well as English as both a second and a foreign language. My current specialties are ACT/SAT/GRE test preparation, writing, math, foreign languages (French, Spanish, Latin), reading comprehension, study skills, and social studies. For the past several years, I have also taught public speaking at the university level and spent several years teaching math, English, and Latin at a local private school.
Even more than a wide knowledge and skill base, my strongest asset as a tutor is an ability to meet students where they are and help them set and achieve their personal goals. I appreciate and respect the uniqueness of each student and situation. I believe humor and imagination are as necessary as hard work and commitment to the process of identifying and overcoming obstacles to academic achievement. Establishing a relationship based on trust and respect enables me to help students identify and build on their strengths, thereby decreasing anxiety and increasing confidence.
My approach to test prep is somewhat unorthodox but has been highly effective. Whereas the AP tests are truly good gauges of students' mastery of the subject, the ACT, SAT, GRE, even GMAT and LSAT are much more a test of their understanding of and comfort with strategy, game theory, and certain kinds of reductionist logic. I find that most students, once they've wrapped their minds around the fact that content isn't what beats these tests (and preferably learned a few relaxation techniques), can raise their scores significantly.
Please feel free to call if you have questions and/or concerns. I look forward to talking with you.
Smart, approachable, and intuitive tutor
One of the toughest things when it comes to teaching someone is finding the style and pace that meets their needs. Alan is wicked smart but also incredibly easy to relate to and a gifted instructor. My teenage daughter has zero issues being at ease with Alan and feels like his instruction really pinpointed her needs. Would highly recommend him to anyone.Sondrah, 3 lessons with Alan
Practical and Knowledgeable
A deeply erudite tutor, Alan also knows how to instruct students without intimidating them and encourages them to adopt manageable strategies to meet their goals without becoming overwhelmed along the way.Heather, 7 lessons with Alan
Amazing GRE Tutor
Alan is a phenomenal tutor for all three GRE subject areas (quantitative, verbal, and writing). The last time I had any math practice was freshman year of college, and as a current M.A. student applying to PhD programs, I felt I was generally unprepared and not confident in my skills. Alan was able to provide a comprehensive math overview that was completely tailored to the test. In addition, Alan provided great strategies for the verbal section, and helped to tailor my writing skills to fit the GRE writing section. My math score increased by five points, and my writing score by 1.5 - which bumped me up to being a more competitive candidate for PhD programs. Not only was Alan academically supportive, but he really helped with my overall confidence as a test taker (which is a huge part of beating the GRE!).Elizabeth, 13 lessons with Alan
I am an adult learner who wanted help to improve my writing skills. I was hesitant to engage anyone to assist me because, frankly, I was uncomfortable with having to ask for help. I was able to move beyond my discomfort and selected Alan to tutor me based on his impressive bio, hoping that he would be able to teach me in a way that I could receive and understand information. Alan is a natural-born teacher. He readily identified where and why I got stuck in the writing process and gave me techniques that have helped me to get past my writing roadblocks. My confidence in my writing ability has improved dramatically in only a short time. And, bonus, Alan has made the learning process enjoyable. I highly recommend him.Laura, 8 lessons with Alan
Not very good.
Had him review and proofread my paper, had a lot of mistakes as in grammar. Failed one of my papers that he proofread.Shelby, 3 lessons with AlanTutor responded:
Having worked with writers for decades, I am deeply offended by the notion that my input was the reason this young woman failed her paper. The student failed one of her papers for reasons not at all related to my tutoring. As to the other paper we worked on, she never showed me her final version because she didn't have time. I showed her how to correct all of the errors in both of her papers, but not having seen the corrections, I don't know what she did.
I enjoyed Alan. He was a great tutor. He helped me to get organized and express my ideas. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone!!Annette, 42 lessons with Alan
I was very impressed by the way Alan took the time to go over the lesson with me and tell me what he thought the course of action should be for my daughter and her learning disability. He was very open to my past obervations of her and I feel very good that he is part of our ACT training. My daughter thought his lesson was helpful and was not dreading going back--as she has with some tutors in the past.Andrea, 5 lessons with Alan
Alan was able to give very helpful tips and strategies for scoring better on the ACT which is my son's goal. He has a style that puts one at ease and comfortable to learn new techniques and correct mistakes made in testing.Spencer, 5 lessons with Alan
Off to an excellent start!
Thoroughly satisfied with our initial contacts and consultation with Alan. He has responded promptly to our phone calls and e-mails answering all questions. He is flexible with his availiability. He is able to confidently articulate a strategic plan to work with our daughter and her ACT prep. He sat down in consultation with us before initiating the initial assessment and provided instant feedback after meeting with our daughter for the first time. He seems to communicate and relate well with both parents and student. This seems like a good fit. We believe we've made an excellent choice.Stephanie, 3 lessons with Alan
2 months - Remarkable improvement
Our daughter has now been working with Alan for 2 months. They meet twice weekly for 1 hour. I can not overstate the value of personal attention to improve learning. The following outlines the benefits we've noted at this stage: -Our child's motivation to learn has improved dramatically. She demonstrates a self-imposed discipline about completing homework on the days she is not working with Alan and eagerly prepares for his arrival on session dates. -Grades have improved from "C"s and "B"s on last report card to "A"s and "B"s on current progress report. Improvement is noted in ALL subjects. Her test scores have improved dramatically. We also note that she is actually learning, not just churning out a "C" by regurgitating information. -Our child is taking pride in her work!! She is no longer dragging through school work like it is a chore. Our goals were to help our child with reading comprehension and improving math skill. It's amazing to me how focusing on a couple of subject areas has provided benefit to her in all subjects. It has also made home life a lot easier - by investing a little in tutoring, the nightly stress/struggle of homework and disappointments with poor test results are fading from memory. We have more time to enjoy each other and have a little fun!Holly, 9 lessons with Alan
