About Linda

Reading, writing, language arts, and English tutor.

I work with all types of learners. We go at the pace and level that feels comfortable for the student (not by the grade level, never by lexile level) and then advance steadily from there.

I work with elementary, middle school, and high schoolers and adults. I make my own lesson plans, honing in on any specific difficulties or problems a student may be having. I take a two fold approach: one part is figuring out how to express your ideas and opinions so that they are intelligent and convincing to others; the second part is to learn how to structure an essay, starting with a well organized paragraph. Grammar is always part of the writing process, never separate lessons,

I teach how to take notes, using a well respected system and altering it for each individual. I also teach revision, the skills of revising and editing being key to improving one's own writing.

We read together, we read out loud, we read by turns. We then discuss our thoughts, ideas, and thinking about how to analyze what we have read.

I recommend books and loan books from my extensive kidlit collection in many genres. I keep up with the latest picture books, middle grade, and young adult books so that I can offer vetted recommendations to my students.

Once you are my weekly student, I offer free extra help any time you need it. Send my your essay on Google Docs and I will edit it, make suggestions, and send it back to you, even if our lesson isn't for a few days. I am fully invested in my students and helping them improve.

I teach out of my home in Bergen county, yours in Bergen or Essex, or parts of Rockland. I work with kids afterschool hours and Saturdays and adults weekday mornings.

I have two teaching certificates of eligibility with advanced standing in New Jersey. I graduated from Columbia with a BA in American history; I am also a law school graduate.

I have run my own business for five years.

I am also available during the school day to work with homeschooled students or college kids in need of extra help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I teach American history to kids using non fiction children's books. I am an expert in this field and use a wide variety of books for each lesson plan. I also teach American history to non native speakers. I use ESL textbooks that provide a thorough introduction as well as a strong understanding of American culture and civics.

Elementary (K-6th)

Reading, Writing, Social Studies. I am certified to teach elementary school in the state of NJ.

I privately tutor elementary studies in Reading, Writing, and Social Studies.

ESL/ESOL

I currently teach adult ESL classes in a language school. I have also been a tutor for ESL for both adults and children.

Literature

I regularly assist students with their writing homework. My students show my their essays and I help them revise and edit them. I also show them how to outline and take notes, essential study skills. In addition, I read the books my middle school students read. We talk about how to find the main idea, how to underline important passages, and how to highlight.

Public Speaking

I have studied the parliamentary debate format now used widely for the Middle School Public Debate Program (MSPDP). I am familiar with the rules and debate format. It is very much like a trial (I am a law school graduate). The arguments need to first be written out and I am a teacher of argument essay which is necessary for debate. I can help students analyze the issues for each argument, learn how to research to back up their opinions, and support their opinions with facts and evidence.

Reading

I use children's nonfiction books to improve reading comprehension and vocabulary while learning about interesting people and events.

Social Studies

Elementary and Middle School Students. I am certified to teach social studies through high school in the state of NJ.

My area of specialty is American History and Law, ethics, etc. I have a BA in American History from Columbia Univerisity and a JD from Brookyln Law School.

Writing

I have taught all kinds of essay forms including narrative, informational, opinion, argumentative, and persuasive. I have also assisted with college and graduate school application essays. We always work on the content of the writing first and then move to how to use the correct form and structure for a particular assignment.
