Bachelors of Arts at Kean University (Psychology)
I have been a Math and Test Prep Tutor for seven years. I have worked for Huntington Learning Centers and also worked privately. Most of my tutoring with Huntington has been for the ACT or SAT, but I have also spent a significant amount of time with Elementary and Middle School students. My private tutoring has been primarily in Math.
My full time job is as a Teacher Aide for the Randolph Board of Education. I currently work in their Middle School, but previously was an Aide for 10 years in the HIgh School. As an Aide, I sometimes will help students with class content and also can be involved with discipline issues. Another responsibility I've had is to be a personal aide helping students with either physical or behavior needs such as Autism. This experience has been invaluable in helping to know what to expect from adolescents, particularly those with special needs.
I acquired my Math background when I returned to Kean University to pursue a second degree in Math. I left after three years due to financial problems. My time at Kean gave me enough knowledge to tutor High School math, including beginning Calculus. My experience tutoring the verbal section of the ACT and SAT has also given me enough knowledge to help with much of what is learned in High School English.
I have tutored Precalculus, Trigonometry, Algebra 2 and 1, and Geometry. I feel I've been most successful as a tutor when I can encourage students to be concerned with more than grades. I like to encourage time scheduling skills and to emphasize an integrated understanding of Math concepts. I also ask students to considering working ahead and not to limit themselves to what has been assigned as homework.
I like most to help students who feel discouraged about their Math skills and also those who don't have the best work habits and study skills. I have my best success with students whose parents are actively involved. I have been a Math and Test Prep Tutor for seven years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
