About Gary

I have found that I loved teaching high school students early on. I also found out that I got along well with them and were able to motivate them to a high achievement level. I taught primarily Biology. I taught sophomore biology for 27 years, usually the honors class, and I taught AP Biology for 25 years with all my students receiving 3 to 5 as their score. What my main goal in teaching is to teach the students how to learn. Once that is accomplished then they can be successful in what ever they want to do. My teaching starts with the fact high expectations will be accomplished and that I will be the one to show them how to get there. I also found the same things about me as a coach. I coached swimming for 18 years and had my own club for ten with great success. My swimmers were met with the facts that we will achieve at a high level if we work together. I really enjoy the give and take between highly motivated teenagers and myself whether it be in sports or academics.

Also I was an accomplished classical pianist. Starting at the age of 7, my call, and continuing my study of piano with lessons till I graduated college. It is still one of my first loves and I think it would be wonderful to pass my passion for the piano along.

As for myself I find that I am able to channel my drive and high expectations into what ever I do. I was a scholarship athlete at Virginia Tech as a swimmer. I learned early on as to how to focus and channel my drive in competition. I like the give and take between highly motivate teenagers and myself.

My many years of teaching and my education should stand on its own for my qualifications of tutoring.

Piano was my first love and still is. Having studied for so long and the love of the instrument should make me qualified to teach it.

I am a person that puts his students first. This has never been about me and my rewards come from the grow of the individual.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
