B.A. from Bryn Mawr College (Economics)
Hi my name is Janavi! I am a freshman at Bryn Mawr College, studying economics and international relations. I started tutoring four years ago through my high school's tutoring society program. I found great enjoyment in it and decided to create a tutoring organization for my community that helped under-performing youth. The subjects I tutored in ranged from reading comprehension, literature, writing, to standardized testing, algebra and public speaking (I was the former Vice President of my High School's Model United Nations team).
Tutoring, for me, has become a means of making a difference in an individual's education and life. From previous experience, I know the best methods to help students with their homework, provide them with enrichment and teaching them test taking strategies that are helpful for both school exams and standardized tests. My goal is to improve a student's grades and test scores by providing them with a full, comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Each lesson will be tailored to the student's needs whether that be homework help, enrichment or skills development. At the end of each lesson I give my students a challenging task for the week. This usually entails practicing verb tenses, answering questions based on a reading passage, working on a problem set, or practicing a certain skill we went over.
Having just entered college I am familiar with the subject matters now being discussed in school curriculums. I am also familiar with the new SAT I format. Students will learn common concepts tested in the math section, the best ways to approach reading passages, grammar tricks used in the writing section and how to construct the optional essay. As a student at Bryn Mawr College, my love for the liberal arts has been founded on a love for writing and literature. I am more than happy to tutor in Reading and Writing for all levels (K-12) including AP Language and Composition as well as AP Literature and Composition.
My schedule is definitely more flexible on weekends (11am-5pm). However, on most weekdays I do hold hours between 4 and 6pm. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have! I look forward to helping you meet your academic goals! Hi my name is Janavi! I am a freshman at Bryn Mawr College, studying economics and international relations. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was the Director General of my high school's Model United Nations team (ranked top 10 in the nation), which entailed teaching freshmen and sophomores how to make speeches on different international and domestic issues. I teach the various components of public speaking including posture, eye contact and hand gestures that emphasize what you are saying. I also work on proper sentence structure, voice projection and most importantly confidence. Having made countless numbers of speeches to large groups, I know what to say in a speech and how to say it.
